Cell phone accessories - what's new?

Added: 01/24/2006

In this article an issue of cell phone accessories is discussed. The overall definition of cell phone accessories is given, several examples of these accessories, such as hands-free accessory, as well as their applications are provided. Special attention is given to the new Samsung gear that is likely to be a breakthrough in mobile communication.

It is beyond any doubt that cell phones are more than just a convenient and conventional means of communication. Over the last several years due to the headlong technical progress they have become much more than that, combining the functions of a phone, calendar, calculator, clock, digital organizer, digital camera, and some additional services, such as SMS for text messaging, packet switching for access to the Internet, and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video.

Other advanced features may include the Internet browsing, music (MP3) playback, email services, watch/alarm, built-in camcorders, ringtones, security measures (e.g. PIN codes), SIM blocks, games, radio, Push to talk, infrared and bluetooth connectivity, and call registers.

Still, apart from those built-in features, there is also a number of external devices that simplify the life of a cell phone owner to an even greater extent. These are called cell phone accessories. Those cell phone accessories may include phone holders, batteries, battery chargers, data cables, data software, antenna boosters, face covers, hands-free headsets, holsters, leather cases, car chargers, hands-free car kits, and so on.

Although those devices and appliances are not literally necessary and essential for you, they can ease the way you use your cell phone. For instance, data cable enables to transfer data from your cell phone to your PC or laptop by means of USB port; hands-free headsets free your hands from holding the phone. The best thing about this is that you can always choose which thing exactly you want for your cell phone ? and buy it. Cell phone accessories are sold everywhere, online sales included.

One of the world?s leading cell phone manufacturers is Samsung, so its share of cell phone accessories on the market is also significant. What is more, it has recently issued an announcement stating it is releasing a device many papers have already coined ?Samsung gear?, a small in-building picocell, a more robust microcell for both in-building and rural deployments, as well as a low power suburban base station, all of which are upgradeable to EV-DO.

However daring and promising this endeavor may seem, Samsung may find it hard to implement the innovation in practice, as it will be not at all easy to penetrate one of the most competitive CDMA markets in the world, where Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks control an estimated 85% to 90% of the infrastructure contracts in the region, and the left is fought over by Motorola and a handful of other vendors.

Indeed, the positions of Samsung in the world of cell phones are firm, for example, it has a commanding position in CDMA handset sales, but its only infrastructure foothold is in Sprint's Puerto Rican network. Samsung plans to use that deployment as a launch point in the US market offering other benefits the incumbent vendors cannot provide.

Samsung is also the only major carrier that manufactures its own CDMA base-band silicon through a licensing deal with Qualcomm meaning it can push products to the market faster than its competitors. That is why Samsung`s novelty launch is not that impossible, especially if consider the reputation it enjoys across the globe.
