Take equal parts fiery flamenco, sizzling salsa and mesmerizing merengue; blend with bewitching bossa nova, captivating calypso and scorching samba; stir in tantalizing tango, enchanting cha cha and magnificent mambo; sprinkle with habañero hot hip-hop and simmer to serve up the annual celebration of San Francisco Carnival. California's largest annual multi-cultural celebration and one of the City's most spectacular traditions, Carnival San Francisco showcases the very best of Latin American and Caribbean cultures with a diverse array of food, music, dance and artistry, including works created by the talented community of Mission District residents and Bay Area artists. This year's celebration brought even more cultural diversity to the party, featuring traditions from Africa, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Guatemala, India, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, the Philippines, Polynesia, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and more. Conceived 27 years ago by a group of local musicians, artists and residents eager to bring the spirit of Latin American and Caribbean culture to San Francisco, Carnival San Francisco is produced by the Mission Neighborhood Centers, Inc. and is supported by San Francisco's Grants for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.


Carnival's Grand Parade is a unique multi-cultural event that celebrates the traditions of many countries and cultures around the world. The floats are spectacular, the music and costumes lavish and varied. Beautifully designed floats depict rich multi-cultural themes, and often feature performers that excite and entertain the crowds. You can see this colorful diversity on numerous photographs of carnival festivities and add updated ones to your personal carnival poster photo album.


Brazilian-style "escola" samba contingents with up to 300 members dance through the streets in fantastic feathered headdresses or sweeping Bahia skirts, while Caribbean artist perform the music and dance of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Trinidad and the Bahamas. Other Parade artists include Mexican Aztec performers, traditional African dancers and drummers, Polynesian dancers, Japanese Taiko drummers, Chinese Lion Dancers, giant puppets and folkloric artists representing Guatemala, Honduras, Bolivia & Perú, and special children's contingents.


The Grand Parade dances through the Mission District streets of San Francisco, is viewed by hundreds of thousands of spectators.
