Cape Town (about 2.7 million inhabitants in 2003), a cosmopolitan hub of the Western Cape Province, is situated on the far south-western tip of Africa, about 1600 kilometers from Johannesburg.
Cape Town has mediterranean climate. Rains in summer are rare, while winter has frequent sunny days. In summertime it is pleasantly warm as a rule, since the hottest days are cooled by winds. In winter the temperature hardly ever falls below 10 degrees.
Cape Town offers a cosmopolitan choice of restaurants, shopping centres, craft markets, cinemas and bars as well as many attractions, including Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, The Two Oceans Aquarium, Ratanga Junction, Tygerberg Zoo, to name a few. Table Mountain is considered to be one of the world's most well-known landmarks. Standing 1086 meters above sea level, this spectacular mountain, which is a part of the Cape Peninsula National Park, dominates Cape Town and attracts numerous visitors. Table Mountain is a home to a rich fauna and flora, which many species are endemic and survive only in the unique ecosystem contained on the mountain. Animals such as baboons and porcupines live here freely.
Life in Cape Town centres around the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront offering everything from shopping malls and markets to theatres and shows. The waterfront complex has become hugely successful and is one of the most popular places to visit in Cape Town. This wonderland has the charms of a working harbour with sea-gulls waiting for scraps from fishing boats. You can embark for Robben Island, the world`s renowned isolated island jail where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, or visit the Two Oceans Aquarium where scuba divers will enjoy the opportunity to dive with sharks.
Cape Town offers much to keep kids entertained. Just 15 kilometers from the centre of Cape Town the world filled with adventure and thrills awaits you at the Ratanga Junction Theme Park. Ratanga Junction in South Africa is definitely worth visiting, especially if you have children. Tygerberg Zoo is located 39 kilometers from the city. The zoo is a wildlife park with animals being free to roam about spacious enclosures. On view are lions, leopards and cheetahs, antelopes, crocodiles, birds, baboons and chimpanzees among others.
Museums and art galleries can be found in abundance here, and South Africa's oldest building, the Castle of Good Hope, is in the city centre. The cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap with their delightful old buildings stand in cultural contrast to the buildings of the oldest wine farm in the Cape, Groot Constantia. Napoleon is said to have favoured the sweet wines of Constantia above all others.
Cape Town is unique. It has the architecture and lifestyle which are broadly cosmopolitan. The City has a bustling nightlife that includes restaurants of all kinds, and many clubs are spread around the city.
