The Canobie Lake Park in Salem was opened in 1902, and a year later it became one of the leading and most popular resorts in New England. Through the years it has developed technologically and grown into an amazing array of attractions, set in a tranquil lakeside setting among flower gardens and tree-lined promenades. By an independent survey, the Canobie Lake Park is rated as one of the most beautiful parks in the country, while the park continues its tradition of being one of the most visited family entertainment centers. Here are some of the Canobie Lake's attractions and rides.
The Canobie's wooden coaster, "The Yankee Cannonball", has been one of the Park's most popular rides since 1936 and is the oldest roller coaster in the park. The advanced "Corkscrew Coaster" takes riders up a seventy three foot high lift, then flies them down and around through two upside-down helixes. The "Kiddie Dragon Coaster" is for an ultimate thrill of the youngest. The "Boston Tea Party" Shoot-the-Chute is the wettest and wildest ride in New England. The Giant Skywheel is one of America's best wheels. The view from the top of this eighty five foot classic is amazingly spectacular, opening the west over the Canobie's four hundred acre lake.
There are over fourten Kiddies Rides for the little ones, including the Land/Sea Rescue, the Mini-Scooters, and the whole KiddieLand is created here for the toddlers with more rides, games and attractions.
In 2002, the park opened an S&S Power freefall, named "Star Blaster", where the riders feel like being blasted off into an outer space. In 2003, the park opened "DaVinci's Dream", a flying-swings ride, which is considered the most beautiful flying carousel in the world. In 2005, the park opened "Wipeout", compared to the wildest waves of Waikiki. In 2005, the park opened its newest attraction - a water park, called "Castaway Island". The other rides include the magnificently restored Antique Carousel, the Canobie Express Steam Train and the exhilarating Log Flume Ride.
A never-ending stream of live entertainment, shows and performances in the Canobie Lake Park makes its visitors scream with delight. Here you can watch hot dancing performances, complete with elaborate costumes, lavish music and dazzling sets, listen to ultra-modern pop songs, feel a part of an unpredictable interactive show, magic and games, and participate in a wild dance party.
The Canobie Lake Park is a haven for gamers with a wide array of fabulous prizes. One of them is "The Old Man o' the Mountain" rock-climbing wall, which is a challenging game of skill with four different courses, set for everyone from the most advanced of experienced climbers to absolute beginners.
Certainly, the Canobie Lake is an ultimate place for shoppers, at least for the reason that there is no sales tax. There are several fun gift shops to satisfy each shopping demand. These are the Fife and Drum Gift Shop, Mary Mary's Gift Shop and the Carousel Gift Shop in Old Canobie Village. Some great tax-free shops are located near the Canobie Lake Park. The Holiday Inn, located within two miles of the Canobie Lake Park, provides an ideal accommodation and an exceptional service for visitors.
