Added: 06/11/2006

Burgundy is a region of France, which can be interesting for very different people across the world due to its numerous attractions, sights and traditions. Old towns and cities, flowering villages, excellent wines and wonderful churches - it's impossible not to like Burgundy if visit it once. People from all over the world come to France annually, and most of them make a visit to this fascinating province in a hope to delight it once again.

If you have never been to Burgundy before you may not know about all the secrets and interesting moments the trip may bring to you.  The province really has a lot to show, and it will willingly do this if you have enough time to discover this land.  Gastronomy and history, culture and religion - Burgundy is a paradise for those who like to find new places and to know the new about them, because this area is an inexhaustible source of such discoveries.

If you are interested in history you should start your Burgundy vacation with some of its great churches.  An interesting fact is that there were two great monastic reform movements in France, both born in the very this province.  Perhaps, the most famous and oldest abbey in the whole France is Cluny Abbey.  It was founded in 910 and became the most prosperous and powerful church not only in the country, but in the whole Christendom.  The Abbey gained its fame because of the very strict fulfillment of the Benedictine Rule; and though these rules were sometimes very severe, the church commanded over ten thousand monks, who lived on a great territory from England to Italy and from Iberia Peninsula to Germany.  The history of the Abbey, which was the largest until the 16th century and answered only to Rome itself, is really amazing.

The second religious and historical place, which you may visit during your Burgundy vacation, is Vezelay - the city, which is still the most important pilgrimage destination in France.  It played a part in the history as the place where the Crusades were gathering and where pilgrims bound for Santiago de Compostella assembled together.  Nowadays the city attracts not only pilgrims, but also people wishing to see the most beautiful Romanesque architecture ensemble of the Abbey.  Besides, the narrow street leading to the church is, indeed, unbelievable, because there are houses representing each period of the history there.  You go up the hill along this street, and it seems you really go through the ages.  This feeling can never be forgotten.

Hardly anybody hasn`t heard about the Burgundian wines at least once in his life, and nowadays you have a wonderful chance to visit the capital of these wines - Beaune.  Holidays to Burgundy will stay in your mind if you find time to delight the perfect drinks the city has to offer and just enjoy the spirit of the place.  In the former Dukes of Burgundy`s mansion you will now find the Burgundy Wine Museum where the history of this wonderful beverage is presented from antiquity to the present days.  You will learn traditions and customs, get acquainted with the life of wine makers and have a chance to try the young and the old wines from the city's cellars.  Your bright impressions will stay with you long after.

Each Burgundy vacation may become a real holiday if you only give yourself a chance to delight it.  Just do not be in a hurry and try to forget about your problems.  Of course, stresses shall not be razed to the ground, but holidays are usually the time for rest and having fun, not for solving the problems.  So, choose Burgundy vacation if you want your rest to be peaceful and calm and delight all wonderful things the province offers.  You will understand that this place is, indeed, perfect for any type of rest.
