Fast food means food, which is prepared and served quickly at outlets called fast-food restaurants. It is a multi-billion dollar industry which grows rapidly in many countries.
Burger King Corporation (BK for short) is a large international chain of fast food restaurants, basically selling hamburgers, soft drinks and french fries. It has more than 340,000 employees and sells about 2.4 billion hamburgers a year. Burger King restaurants serve approximately 1,040 customers per restaurant per day, or approximately 11.4 million customers daily. Quite convincing figures, aren`t they?
But in 1954, when the history of the chain begins, it was a small but cozy cafe. Burger King's first restaurant-originally called Insta Burger King-was opened in Miami, Florida, USA by James McLamore and David Edgerton. Before opening the restaurant, McLamore had visited the hamburger stand, which belonged to Dick and Mac McDonald. Having caught the potential of their innovative assembly line-based production system, he decided to create a kind of his own.
His idea was to make outlets with take-away or take-out providers, and an area for customers to eat the food on the premises. He provided most outlets with so-called "drive-thru" service, which allowed customers to order and pick up food without going out of their cars.
Burger King's trademark product is a hamburger called the Whopper. This can also include grilled chicken sandwiches. Burger King restaurants also offer the angus burger, which is a larger, "better burger". Like other fast-food chains, Burger King has meals for children: the regular Kids Meal and the Big Kids Meal, which is aimed at "tweens" and teenagers and has more food. The Burger King Kids Club Gang was a group of fictional characters created to promote the Burger King Kids Club meal.
In the 1971 the Burger King company expanded Australian markets , establishing Hungry Jack's affiliated company, selling burgers of usual range. Hungry Jack's were a success with the Kids Club mascots, allowing children to have birthday parties at their restaurants based on different themes, and also with their Kids Club Meals . Taking into account Australian speciality, Burger King restaurants offer burgers, based on the traditional Australian fish and chips, including fried egg, bacon, onion, and beetroot with the traditional meat, lettuce, and tomato.
Because of its convenience, fast food is popular and commercially successful in most modern societies, but it is often criticized for being unhealthy, because of a large content of cholesterine, it si also said that fast food leads to obesity and consequently to heart attacs.
So the company created a vegetarian menu. Taking the design and look of a Whopper Junior, the sandwich uses soy-based patty instead. It also enriches the number of meatless salads, trying to attract those, who care for their health. That is why, each will be satisfied with the menu.
And next time, going into one of your favorite Burger King restaurants your friends will look at you with widely opened eyes, when you mention some facts of its history. Isn`t it pleasant?
