Added: 01/13/2006

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America have impacted needy children since the turn of the century. The clubs have provided direction, friendship, guidance and just by "being there" have had a positive affect on children of every race and creed. 3300 different centers have formed the net of Boys and Girls clubs of America in which about 3.6 million children from under privileged and poor families are benefiting from different types of after-school activities under supervision of very skilled and qualified professionals: teachers, educators and coaches.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America is a public institution which is a national federation of clubs (mainly of a city type) where out-of-school sport activities, professional training and classes, fun and entertainment for children are organized. This type of activity was originated in 1860 when the first club in Hartford, Connecticut was established.

This national institution was established in 1906 and until 1990 was called the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. About two million children ranging in the age from 6 to 18 years old, and over one thousand clubs with permanent staff members are very active all over America. The headquarters of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America is located in New York.

Very often, different companies in America pilot different types of fund-raising initiatives aimed at raising money that in turn can be used to create programs and pay for the varied staff of the many Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

For example, "Staples" which is the world biggest company dealing with the sale of the stationery and office goods, and with a sales volume in excess of USD 11.6 million dollars per year is a big donator to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. With 1500 stores in the USA, Canada and EC countries, and now celebrating its 17 year-anniversary, Staples is heavily involved in charity events such as those for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

As a result of this charity action, Boys and Girls Clubs of America will get nearly $500,000 dollars. Since getting involved in May 2003, 10% of the company shops income has been directed to support these clubs activities. Besides, costs earned from catalogues and internet sales will be also allocated to these clubs accounts.

In accordance with the documents provided by United States tax inspectors and the freedom-of-Information-Act, it's no secret that the President of the United States; George Bush has earned $89,480.00 in the the last year. The family of the President has paid taxes in amount of $24,342. As it is stated by Associated Press, Mr. Bush has contributed nearly $14,330.00 for charity purposes. Part of this amount, and more specifically $75,000.00 was received as a result of sales of his biographical book entitled "A Charge to Keep"` was contributed to the following institutions: "Boy Scouts of America ", " Boys and Girls Clubs of America", Valley Boys and Girls Club,  and Girls Inc.

Speaking in general, one should state that there are no typical American clubs and camps. One type of them can be equipped with perfect conditions; another one is featured with tents and a WC being dug in the earth. Several types of American camps and clubs are listed: private or public camps of assistance, religious clubs and camps, boy scouts or girl scouts camps and clubs, clubs for invalids and clubs for the children with limited abilities, day time camps, etc. The list can be very long.

Private schools are very popular in America. For the directors of private schools or private camps - their schools or camps are their business. So in accordance with the requirements of this type of business, children should be provided with a possibility to have a good time and to be in a safe environment. As a rule, such camps are featured with perfect conditions. Private camps accept children from middle and higher levels of society.

Such camps run usually for 9 week intervals. The first requirement for the administration is safety conditions for the children who are staying in such camps. The second type of camps which are very popular in America and which are governed as a rule by the non-specialized institutions like YMCA or Boys and Girls Clubs are the so-called assistance camps. Children from families with a low level of income are coming to such camps and benefiting from them.
