Blizzard Beach: The Largest And Newest Park Within The Walt Disney World Resort

Added: 02/28/2006

Located conveniently within the Walt Disney World resort property in Lake Buena Vista, Blizzard Beach was the third water park to open within the resort, after Typhoon Lagoon and River Country. Its theme is the legend of the freak snowstorm of the area, which had led to the establishment of the first ski resort in Florida. A few years later, the ski resort was changed into a water park with the alligator, Ice Gator, as its symbol.

Since the day of its establishment in April 1995, Blizzard Beach has proven to be one of the most popular attractions for those on vacation at the Walt Disney World resort. The majority of the park's attractions can be found atop of Mount Gushmore, with the total elevation of 200 feet, which makes it Florida's fifth highest point. The mount itself is divided into three beautiful slopes, including Red, Orange, and Purple, to help guests navigate the park.

The Orange Slope attractions are concentrated at the mountain's uppermost point, and can be accessed by chairlift.

The flagship attraction at Blizzard Beach Water Park is Summit Plummet, a thrilling ride, regarded as the fastest and largest free fall body slide in the world. Rising over 120 feet, it sends riders flinging into the pool at a speed up to 55 miles per hour.

Running through waterfalls and rapids, Teamboat Springs is a 1,200 foot-long family-friendly raft ride, enjoying great popularity among families with children.

Purple Slope attractions can be accessed from a pathway near the Downhill Double Dipper's pool. Major attractions include Snow Stormers, Downhill Double Dipper, and Toboggan Racers.

Located at the very rear of the water park, Red Slope has only one attraction: Runoff Rapids, featuring one enclosed, and two unenclosed, tube slides.

One of the greatest attractions at Disney's Blizzard Beach water park is Cross Country Creek, traveling around the park's perimeter. Depending on the number of visitors, the journey usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

Pre-teenage kids are welcome to enjoy Ski Patrol, and the wave pool Melt Away Bay, while more grown up guests are offered the Leisure Pool, containing icebergs, on which visitors can walk across.

Commonly referred to as the T-Bar, Fahrenheit Drops is a rope drop attraction that places guests in eight feet of the deepest water body in Walt Disney World. Those eager to participate in the adventure must be less than five feet tall. Similar to Fahrenheit Drops, Freezin' Pipe Springs is a short body slide, which deposits visitors in the same water area, but doesn't have any height restrictions.

With its water jets, gentle slides, and picnic benches, the children's play area, Tike's Peak, is a favorite destination for the entire family.

Available at Blizzard Beach are also several dining areas, offering a variety of options from full meals to light snacks to alcoholic beverages, and a gift shop, designed to meet the needs of every visitor.

In addition to being the newest water park, Blizzard Beach is also the largest water park within the Walt Disney World Resort, featuring more than 17 slides, a play area for pre-teens, and a stunning water pool. It is also the coolest water park of the area, nestled amidst the alpine snows of Florida. However, it had long ago established itself as the top tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. Like any other of the Disney water parks, Blizzard Beach tends to be crowded, especially in summer. During the hottest part of the day, it's great to relax near the wave pool or enjoy one of the thrilling slides.
