Award-Winning Discovery Pont and Other Sights of Dundee.

Added: 05/17/2006

Dundee welcomes all comers to have an exciting tour of its sights and history sites. Here you can see castles, churches, parks, an amazing waterfall and great ships that history has witnessed. City of Discovery - that is the popular Dundee name. And indeed, here you can discover the Antarctic with Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton and their research ship RRS Discovery. Have a nice voyage to this discovery point!

Set by the beautiful River Tay, Dundee is referred as the Scotland's fourth city. It is a vibrant and modern city that has its history and traditions as well as its sights that attract many visitors every year. Being a modern city with highly developed technological industries, Dundee is proud to be the home of the Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Students - rather popular Scottish educational institution that attracts great number of students annually.

Dundee is proud of its historic sites: Arbroath Abbey, Brechin Cathedral Round Tower, Glamis Castle, HMS Frigate Unicorn, St. Andrews Castle and well-known Discovery Pont. Of course it is not the complete list of Dundee sights, but these are the most popular and visited places that are really worth of visiting.

Dedicated to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Arbroath Abbey was established in 1178 by King William the Lion-Hearted. It is the place where Scotland's Declaration of Independence from England was signed in 1320. Brechin Cathedral Round Tower is rather ancient architecture masterpiece. It dates back to the 11th century, and its 105 feet tall round tower was built about 1000 AD. A doorway of the Brechin Cathedral Round Tower has different elaborate pictographs. Glamis Castle, nowadays the family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, was the birthplace of Princess Margaret. Since 1372 it has been a royal residence. Not many people know that Glaim Castle is the setting for the classic play "Macbeth."

HMS Frigate Unicorn (His Majesty's Frigate UNICORN) was built for the Royal Navy in Chatham dockyard, and it was launched in 1824. Having been built as a war vessel, it never saw active duty. Frigate Unicorn, of 46 guns is a unique representative of the brief transitional period between the traditional wooden sailing ship and the revolutionary iron steamship. HMS Frigate Unicorn is now Scotland's only example of a warship from the golden age of sail offering spectacular views of the sea from its four decks. St. Andrews Castle was erected around 1200 and provides the finest example of siege tactics in Europe. Unfortunately, in the 17th century some parts of the castle were torn down. Anyway, the ruins of this amazing construction are worth seeing.

One of Scotland's most exciting visitor attractions is an award-winning Discovery Pont. Situated on Dundee waterfront, Discovery Pont is the home of Captain Scott's famous RRS Discovery.  Built in 1901, RRS Discovery is one of the last wooden three-masted ships built in Britain and the first to be constructed specifically for scientific research. RRS Discovery, the Royal Research Ship, carried Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first, remarkably successful journey to the Antarctic, known as the National Antarctic Expedition. Nowadays Discovery Pont is the multimedia centre that brings the region's seafaring history to life. Now on display, RRS Discovery welcomes all comers to discover a world of Antarctic adventure.

Another worth visiting Dundee sights are Law Hill, Monikie Country Park and Reekie Linn Falls.

Law Hill is the only way to enjoy the Dundee panorama. Known as the highest point in the city, Law Hill can be an exhausting walk, but it is worth every single step. From the top, you can delight in a panoramic glimpse of the river, harbor, rolling hills, and meadows that surround the city. Monikie Country Park is 140-acre area where you can see the water flowers that bloom freely in the woodlands and banks.

There you'll have the possibility to see a variety of wildlife. Reekie Linn Falls is a stunning waterfall where the Isla River descends more than 75 feet. The roar of the water and the natural beauty of the wooded gorges are breathtaking and prodigious.

Being not well-known city, Dundee can surprise and amaze even the most fastidious and finical tourist.
