Avoid cheap Phnom Penh hotels, choose moderately priced properties

Added: 05/22/2006

If you plan visiting Phnom Penh, there is no need to worry about accommodation. In most cases, Phnom Penh hotels offer a variety of facilities and services at affordable prices and discounts if you stay longer than a week. Nearly each reasonably priced hotel in the city center or downtown is equally suited for needs of families, leisure and business travelers.

The choice of hotels in Phnom Penh is quite wide. Phnom Penh Cambodia offers old and historic hotels, upscale facilities, moderately priced and budget hotels and a few boutique style properties. Most often, Phnom Penh hotels are good value for the price and even luxury properties are moderately priced if compared to European standards.

However, you would better avoid budget Phnom Penh hotels with tempting prices starting at ten dollars. This kind of accommodation is, perhaps, the most abundant in the capital;however, many properties are too much downscale, that means questionable cleanness, excellent wall audibility and poor service. Yes, there are some good properties amongst budget Phnom Penh hotels, but it will take time to find one. The most part of budget accommodation is located in and around Sisowath Quay, the busy riverside boulevard, and on the eastern shore of the Boeung Kak Lake, north of Phnom Penh.

Despite the poor appearance of cheap hotels in Phnom Penh, the rest of accommodation maintains high standards. At many moderately priced Phnom Penh hotels, you will encounter not only spacious and comfortable rooms but also attentive staff speaking several languages to better understand your needs and desires. Another benefit for travelers is that a number of Phnom Penh hotels offer considerable discounts if you stay for a week or two, or if you stay at the hotel for the second time.

•One of the truly good hotels is the Asia Hotel, large and modern, suitable for both business and leisure travelers. There is a variety of spacious rooms to choose from - deluxe, VIP, with balcony, or suite, a restaurant serving Khmer, Chinese, Japanese and French food, gym, business center and conference facilities, sauna, spa and banquet room. The personnel welcomes visitors from each continent and speaks English, Japanese, French, Chinese, Cantonese and Thai. Single room rates start at thirteen dollars and additional discounts are also available.

•Another good variant is the Dara Reang Sey Hotel. Quite spacious and lucid, the hotel offers everything you need for comfortable and relaxing stay. Business center and cafe, coffee shop, restaurant, and souvenir shop are some of the hotel's facilities. The services include tour and travel desk, baby-sitting, internet center, car/motorbike and bicycle rental. The rooms do not vary in design but all of them have balconies.

•The Big Luck Hotel boasts very convenient setting on the edge of downtown Phnom Penh, five minutes from Central Market and a few minutes from the main business district. The Big Luck Hotel is for visitors with refined tastes. Lavishly decorated in Chinese style, the hotel offers large sunny rooms, coffee shop, rooftop pool, sauna, steam room and massage facilities, a beauty salon, conference facilities and business center. The room rates start at twenty five dollars.

Other reasonable priced, modern and comfortable hotels located downtown Phnom Penh include the Favor Hotel, famous for its restaurant; the Champs Elysees Hotel, boasting serene and peaceful setting; and Chung Hsin Hotel, with a Chinese restaurant, a roof top bar and excellent massage service.
