A Variety of Attractions in BremenOriginally a small fishing settlement on a sandy slope of the River Weser, Bremen has managed to grow to one of the most prosperous cities in Germany. In the XI century under the influence of Archbishop Adalbert, the city became known as Rome of the North, while during the Middle Ages it was a member ofthe Anseatic League. An independent imperial city since 1646, it still remains one of the most important ports in Europe. There is a great variety of sights and attractions in Bremen, allowing it to rival the biggest cultural centers of Europe. Regarded as one of the greatest museums in Germany, Focke-Museum evokes the glory day of the city as a maritime power in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance era. The original statues carved for the Rathaus faade are on display, along with secular art and ecclesiastical art. Visitors can wander back into history to the Roman times represented in the Roman collection. The museum also features Saxon antiquities along with the artefacts from prehistoric times.
