A Variety of Attractions in Bremen

Added: 06/12/2006

Located about 76 miles northwest of Hannover and 74 miles southwest of Hamburg, Bremen is the oldest coastal city in Germany, ranked second after Hamburg among German ports. On arriving at this unique town, the first things you are sure to experience in Bremen are the sights and smells of cacao, coffee, lumber and tropical fruit giving the city an international flavor. Bremen is also one of the two towns comprising the state of Bremen, the other being Bremerhaven.

Originally a small fishing settlement on a sandy slope of the River Weser, Bremen has managed to grow to one of the most prosperous cities in Germany. In the XI century under the influence of Archbishop Adalbert, the city became known as Rome of the North, while during the Middle Ages it was a member ofthe Anseatic League. An independent imperial city since 1646, it still remains one of the most important ports in Europe. There is a great variety of sights and attractions in Bremen, allowing it to rival the biggest cultural centers of Europe. The major sights are concentrated on the Marktplatz - the parlor of the city life for over 1,000 years. Across the square, from the Rahtaus you'll find Schotting, the example of a combination of Renaissance and Gothic architecture. As a contrast to these great ancient masterpieces, the Haus der Bergerschaft is home to Parliament in Bremen. In spite of being made of concrete, steel and glass, it does not look out of place. One of Bremen's renowned attractions, Bittcherstrasse is a brick-paved reproduction of an alley filled with estaurants, shops, galleries and museums and running from Marktplatz to the Weser River. It was designed to feature past and present of Bremen. Here you'll find the oselius House - the XVI century merchant's house with a large collection of medieval objects of furniture and art; and the Paula-Becker-Modersohn House, dedicated to the outstanding painter who lived and worked in Bremen.

The old quarter of Bremen, Schnoor is home to small cottages that have been rented to artisans and artists in the effort to relive old arts and crafts. This place is visited not only for atmosphere, but also for unique shops, art galleries and restaurants. Possibly the biggest attraction in Bremen, Dom St Petri towers over the rest of the buildings in the Altstadt. Established originally as the archbishop's church in 1043, it was rebuilt in the XIII, XVI and XIX centuries. Visitors are also welcome to the Dom Museum displaying artefacts that have been found during the restoration of the Dom, such as XV century wall paintings and medieval tombs. Among other exhibits is a collection of historic altar implements and remains of the early Romanesque building.

Regarded as one of the greatest museums in Germany, Focke-Museum evokes the glory day of the city as a maritime power in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance era. The original statues carved for the Rathaus faade are on display, along with secular art and ecclesiastical art. Visitors can wander back into history to the Roman times represented in the Roman collection. The museum also features Saxon antiquities along with the artefacts from prehistoric times. In addition to its rich and diverse cultural life, Bremen offers much in terms of nightlife, shopping and performing arts. There is a wide variety of bars, pubs, restaurants, casinos, nightclubs and theatres to suit needs of even the most discerning guests. Whether you are travelling for business or leisure, take advantage of car hire Bremen offered by such well-known car rental companies as Alamo, Europcar, Avis, Sixt and Hertz.
