Attractions in Normandy: paradise for gourmands

Added: 06/19/2006

Normandy is a province of France where each respected gourmand has to come at least once. The territory of the province was always a part of France, so the traditions and customs of the region are deeply rooted and closely connected with the very French culture and history. Architecture and splendid countryside are the things, which attract the enormous quantity of tourists every year to Normandy, the world of culinary and wonderful outdoor activities.

Normandy consists of two main parts: the Upper Normandy and the Lower Normandy.  There are also the Channel Islands, but though they are geographically and culturally a part of Normandy, they have never belonged to France and are ruled by the British Monarchy.  If you are going to visit this province and know the culture of France at least a little you may suppose that the region has its own language, like any other does, and you will be right.  But it is not a problem in our times, as the majority of the population speak traditional French instead of the Norman language, which is still popular only with old people mostly in the Upper Normandy.

This land has a lot to show to you, your family and your friends if you have a desire and time to visit it.  Numerous parks and gardens astonishing with their unbelievable beauty; chateaux awaking romantic dreams about past times in your soul; majestic churches and cathedrals built in a special and, indeed, unique Normandy style, which combines influences of different nations.  Normandy is rich and never grudges tourists its sights and secrets.
You can have so much pleasure in Normandy that you will surely remember your vacations long after they are finished, and this will happen due to endless activities the province may offer to you.

People say you cannot see the Normandy province if visit only big cities and famous places the agencies often include into the itineraries of their tours.  To discover this land you are to visit its countryside.  The wonderful nature, quiet villages, wooded lanes and deep rivers will astonish your mind and rejoice your soul.  The nature of the region is truly worth to see and, as well, you will be able to get a close acquaintance with the famous Normandy dishes, which are made mostly not in megapolices, but in small villages located near rich pastries and lush meadows.

These meadows are the places where wonderful Normandy cheeses and butter are born.  Some sorts of cheese produced in Normandy are famous all around the world.  The names of Camembert, Neufchatel, Livarot are well-known to the world community.  As for the butter, it has a lot of prizes and is highly evaluated by the best cookers of the globe.  But, of course, the main food in Normandy, which cannot be even compared with that of other countries, is its seafood.  Not only you can delight the wonderful, melting on the tongue dishes prepared with salmon, turbot and oysters - you may even fish them.  And it's one of the additional attractions of rest in Normandy.  Wonderful impressions always stay at tourists' memory after tasting the traditional Normandy drinks, such as apple cider (of which Normandy is the main producer) and apple brandy.

If you plan not only to try delicious food, but also have some cultural rest visiting some places of interest you will find a lot in Normandy.  But, perhaps, the most famous and interesting site is Bayeaux city where the world-renowned Tapestry is located.  You may see this historical sight in the official exhibition centre.  The Tapestry tells the story of the battle of Hastings and is very interesting for those who are fond of history, arts and works of ancient people.  Normandy, with its splendid landscapes and majestic cathedrals, large forests and sunny meadows, hospitable people and fascinating sites has all chances to become one of your favorite rest destinations.
