Athabasca University: an internationally recognized leading provider of online courses

Added: 11/21/2005

Athabasca University (AU) puts students in control of their postsecondary education. With distance and online delivery methods, students can study online - anywhere - anytime. AU is an internationally recognized leader in the field of distance education and lifelong learning and the Canada's leading online Open University. AU makes it possible for about thirty thousand students annually to pursue university studies at their own pace, at their own homes or workplaces. It offers undergraduate and graduate courses, programs and certificates in over sixty programs and more than seven hundred courses in a variety of disciplines.

Athabasca University (AU) is the Canada's leading distance-education and open online university. It is the largest post-secondary institution, specializing in online and distance learning in Canada. Internationally, it is a recognized leader in the field. About two hundred thousand students have registered in AU's individualized courses and programs, since the University was created by the Government of Alberta in 1970. Now, it currently serves about thirty two thousand students per year, following a period of a rapid growth, which has seen student numbers double over a six-year period.

Athabasca University makes it possible for students to earn a university education, regardless of where they live or work, or their commitments to careers or families. The University strives to remove the barriers of time, space, a past educational experience and an income. A barrier of time is eliminated through individualized study courses, which allow students to learn at their own pace. A flexible instruction sets them free from the demands of specified class times and rigid institutional schedules. There are no admissions deadlines for undergraduate individualized study courses. Space constraints are removed, since AU can be wherever you are, through individualized-study packages (a student manual, study guide, textbook(s) and, if appropriate, CD-ROM, audiocassettes and videotapes) and the Internet. Learning is no longer depending on the level of income. AU's method of learning allows students to pursue part-time studies and a full-time career.

In 2005, Athabasca University finished enhancing the online teaching of hundred and seventy five of its most popular courses. They are designed by faculty and other experts in the field. With a focus on liberal arts, sciences and professional programs, AU offers more than seven hundred courses, as well as bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and undergraduate and graduate certificates and diplomas. Anyone over the age of sixteen is eligible for the admission to undergraduate courses or programs, not considering a previous educational experience. There is year-round registration for most undergraduate courses and students are admitted to the university and programs of study on a continuous basis. Students start their studies in the beginning of any month, subject to course availability. Graduate programs have various application deadlines and start dates throughout the year.

Distance and online delivery methods provide maximum flexibility. Athabasca University uses a variety of distance learning methods, including multi-media online activities, print materials, Web, e-mail, Internet, CD-Rom, computer software, audio/video conferencing, audio/video tapes and TV or radio. Any particular course might use a combination of deliveries. Some courses are also available in the classroom, taught in association with one of AU's partners. AU presents both: paper-based and/or online courses. It means students, learning at a distance, do not need a computer unless registering in a computer course or online course.

AU also provides extensive student support services, comprising an access for students with disabilities. A network of academic staff, advisors, counselors, tutors, support staff and help desk personnel provide information and recommendations.
