Alternative learning format with NMC flexible learning

Added: 11/17/2005

Flexible learning is as simple as it sounds. The opportunities for learning under this format are flexible in the time and place of study, in the way the materials are delivered, how and when the learning is assessed, and so on. Most colleges and universities offer flexible learning as an alternative delivery method.

As a community college, Northwestern Michigan College offers a variety of programs and services to meet the many needs of learners: academic degrees/programs; personal enrichment and cultural activities; corporate and customized training. Northwestern Michigan College programs and courses include flexible ways to learn.

NMC flexible learning offers several alternate methods to deliver courses: Online, open, Telecourses, or any combination of these. These delivery formats require significant self-motivation and discipline. You may be able to learn where you want, though some courses will require campus meetings, proctored testing, or labs which may mean you must travel to campus. But you can choose when to study, and the order in which different topics are studied. NMC flexible learning delivery formats provide flexibility in time and place by delivering instructions via the Internet and a computer which helps overcome the barriers of inconvenient schedules, job commitments, family responsibilities, and location.

NMC flexible learning courses with an open delivery component are self-paced. This flexibility allows you to attend class at your own convenience and work at your own pace. This delivery mode normally requires regular participation in online discussion groups and submission of assignments electronically. Course materials are made available several ways, depending upon the course. The materials may be available online using blackboard or through a printed binder.
Anyone can enroll in NMC flexible learning courses. Classes that state "open entry" allow registration up until the ninth week of the semester. You will have up to 15 weeks (depending on the course credits) to work with your instructor to complete the self-guided exercises.

As a NMC student you will be able to get one of the online Degrees brought to you by NMC flexible learning delivery format. An Associate Degree in nursing (ADN) is available as an online option. It will make all of the nursing theory or academic classes available in an online format. Associate in Science and Arts Degree is also an online program. The degree is generally pursued by students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree. Criminal Justice  is an online collaborative program.

Students who complete the program are prepared to transfer to a four-year college or university and continue study toward a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law, security, public service, and law enforcement. Electronics Technology Certificate  is also an open/self-paced program. It will help you obtain knowledge and skill base necessary for employment as an electronic technician. NMC flexible learning courses with an internet/online delivery component will make use of the Blackboard system. This system is designed to allow students to easily access their course materials, take quizzes, and collaborate with faculty and other students.

Flexible learning with NMC facilitates opportunities for students to learn more successfully by being more independent and more responsible for their own learning.
