Admiralty Bay - the Natural Harbor of Bequia

Added: 04/26/2006

The minute you sail into Admiralty bay you know you're experiencing something special. One of those rare places associated with complete serenity and relaxation, the Grenadines are situated in the Southeastern Caribbean some 90 miles west of Barbados. These are 32 islands stretching south from St Vincent, only eight of them being populated and four having their own small airports. The largest in the chain of the Grenadine Islands -- Bequia is thought of as the Jewel of the Grenadines due to its picturesque views and scenic landscaping.

Best known for its lovely white coral sand beaches and crystal clear water, ideal for sailing, diving and snorkeling, Bequia, Indian Bay is a popular tourist destination and an island for a connoisseur. Indeed, few islands in the Caribbean can boast such a beautiful and tranquil location for a wonderful escape and dream holiday. Bequia is the island that offers its visitors a paradise complete with stretches of deserted beaches, nice reefs and quiet lagoons in the West Indian atmosphere and with a friendly welcoming population of 6,000 inhabitants. The island's center is forested and hilly, offering a dramatic backdrop to the beaches and bays.

The natural harbor of Bequia, Admiralty Bay is a favorite anchoring place for yachtsmen from the countries like the United States, Great Britain, Canada, South Africa, Italy, Norway, Belgium, France, Australia and New Zealand. It is famous for the 17th century pirates, and the Spanish, French and British Navies is found today dotted with over 100 sailing yachts. The region around Admiralty Bay has wonderful opportunities for swimming, kayaking, parasailing and other water sports.

The Island of Bequia is encircled by white sand beaches, a great number of which disappear into coves, ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving and sailing. Accommodations are diverse here, varying from small cozy West Indian inns to luxurious cottages to suit every taste and budget. Much of the nightlife is concentrated on the beachside barbeques and in hotels, accompanies by a steel band. Those interested in shopping should consider the Crab Hole, next to the Plantation House, Admiralty Bay, known for the shops stretching along the water and offering gold and sterling silver jewelry. You'll be also offered to pay a visit to the workshops of Sergeant's Model Boatshop Bequia, enjoying the greatest popularity among yacht owners who want to have a scale-model reproduction of their vessel. All the models are carved from mahogany and white pine and painted then brilliant colors.

Among other Bequia's attractions, equally worth a visit is Friendship Bay, known for its secluded pristine sands where you can order a drink from the bar or rent a water sports equipment. Lower Bay and Industry Bay are both alluring beaches fringed by palm trees and quite suitable for snorkeling and swimming.

While visiting Bequia, consider a stay in one of its fully-equipped and comfortable resorts, offering the atmosphere of relaxation and ambience. One of the most widely reputed hotels in the area, the Frangipani is a favorite place of yacht people coming here to enjoy this fascinating adventure. This lovely hotel has originated as the apartment of 19th century sea captain and has added accommodations bordering a sloping tropical garden since having been transformed into a hotel.

The five rooms of the complex overlook the Admiralty Bay and attract many return visitors. The accommodations in the original house are less glamorous and smaller as compared to better outfitted apartments in the garden. Guests are offered here a wide range of activities, such as tennis, golf, scuba diving, sailboat rides and other water sports.
