Additional Food Nutritional Value

Added: 11/11/2005

Because products have different nutritional values, it is important to bear in mind the list of foods, which we should consume in order to maintain our body's proper functioning, and the foods which have low or no nutritional value, and therefore, must be excluded or eaten sparingly. It must also be keep in mind that different cooking methods may alter the primary content of the nutrients in food.

First of all, it is import to know how the food nutritional value of this or that product is measured. We must be able to tell the difference between carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that provide our body with energy and keep us healthy. Nutritional foods have these elements and, therefore, must dominate in our rationale.
What are some names of nutritional foods? Meats, fish, milk eggs, and nuts are full of proteins and sugars and cereals are sources of carbohydrates. Fats can be found in oils mainly, fish, eggs, and milk. Fats, proteins, and carbohydrates have this calorie count. One gram of fat has nine calories and one gram of protein or carbohydrates has four calories. Vitamins, minerals, and enzymes have zero calories.
Breads, cereals, and other whole-grain products supply the body with thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, iron and starch. They are also good sources of magnesium, folic acid, zinc, and fiber.
Fruits and vegetables give us vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and water. Citrus fruits, berries, and melons have vitamin C. Yellow fruits, such as grapefruit and oranges have vitamin A. Foliate, magnesium, and potassium can also be found in many fruits. In order to have fruits and vegetables as part of our nutritional repertoire we should substitute fresh juices for juices that are from the grocery store because the latter contains high amounts of added sugar.
Dark green vegetables like broccoli and spinach are rich in vitamin C, riboflavin, magnesium, calcium.  Carrots have vitamin A. Legumes can be used as an alternative to meat. The food nutritional value of tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, and asparagus must not be underestimated at all.
Eggs have food nutritional value as well; they contain minerals and are often eaten instead of poultry and meat. Meat, fish, and poultry have niacin, protein, zinc, iron, vitamins B6 and B 12, and phosphorus. However, they have many calories, fats, and cholesterol.  Much of the fat that is added to meat comes from cooking it. Chicken nutritional value has been the subject of some controversy because it has been estimated that chicken meat has large amounts of protein, carbohydrates, potassium, and magnesium. However, it lacks zinc, iron, riboflavin, and vitamins A and C.  It should be mentioned though; different cooking methods are responsible for preserving food nutritional value. That is why preference should be given to baking and broiling food, instead of frying it.
The food nutritional value of cheese, milk and yogurt is high in calcium, protein, and riboflavin. They also have vitamins A and D. It is recommended to substitute skim milk, low-fat milk, low-fat yogurt, and low-fat cheese for regular milk and regular cheese.
Alcoholic beverages, sweets, and desserts provide few nutrients and are sources of many calories and added sugars. Start cutting your calories by not consuming them too often.
