The whole community, living in the castle, produced or grew everything necessary for the daily living behind the castle's huge walls and hunted in the surrounding land. Travelers could count on a night's sleep and a free meal at a castle. Nowadays, a medieval castle is the best evoker of our sense and understanding of the medieval past, which magnificent structure has served for centuries as a home, fortress and a status symbol.
