Hiring good family entertainment may be the toughest part of throwing a party. Unlike adults, who will laugh out of politeness at unfunny acts, the children in the audience not even pretend they like a show if they don't. Consequently, you need to have one that will hold their attention --as well entertain the adults in the crowd.
This may require a little bit of thought about the audience's age and interests and sophistication. Asking around with parents and teachers gives you an idea about what sort of childrens entertainment today's kids might be interested in. Once you've got an idea what kind of act you will hire, you can start interviewing specific performers.
While evaluating the performer, you should get a feel for their customization skills. Does the entertainer want to give you a "one size fits all routine" or ask for inside information about the family to use in his act? Not every act needs customization, but this personal touch can add a lot to an act.
Above all, go with a family entertainment professional who has done this before. Dealing with a bunch of kids is stressful enough on its own. An entertainer that can do the job that he or she has to do without supervision gives you one less thing to worry about.
If you think that family entertainment, e.g. a family party, is not for outsiders and you are able to organize it on your own the following instructions will be helpful.
First of all, decide how many guests will be invited. The less are invited the easier to organize the party. Is it going to be an indoor or outdoor party? If a lot of relatives are present and the weather permits it is better to spend the time together outdoors, e.g. a picnic. At outdoors parties people usually feel more relaxed and are willing to help the hosts. A family picnic held at a ranch, in park-like surroundings or in the garden beside the house may include paper napkins and plates which create a more casual atmosphere. You will save money on paper plates and napkins and will not have to wash up the dishes afterwards.
You know what skills your family members have so ask them to show what they can do. Thus they will help you organize the family party. It may be music: boys are good for DJs, they usually keep abreast of modern music. Kids will be able to manage with decorations, e.g. ask them to decorate the area or the room with balloons, flags, garlands or flowers. Those who are fond of drawing may decorate the area/room with their own drawings so you will have an exhibition. Take the benefit from it and organize the drawing competition or sell the pictures by auction. Be sure all the relatives will remember this auction. You will have a lot of fun!
Practically in each family there is somebody who looks taking pictures ask this person to make a picture or video report of this party. Your family will have an occasion for the next family party with 'What fun we have had together' theme.
Do not forget about seating arrangements, parking area, games and awards. There are a lot of picnic games for adults and children to play together:
' Gunny sack races
' Egg toss
' Spin races
' 'Peanut in the Pie' contest
' Mummy wrap
' Adult/child balloon sit
' Bucket brigade
For prizes you may choose key chains, photo frames, colorful mugs, balls, plastic boomerangs, a bar of soap wrapped in the gift paper, soft-tip pens, and a bouquet of flowers.
Do not forget that family entertainment is an essential part of your family life.
