Once there was VHS... No, no, no. Once there nothing at all ' no movies, no cinemas, no video and even no TV (although nowadays this seems almost impossible).  And then a new era began.

Scientists keep on inventing and discovering and the new stages of the technical progress and development never stop surprising the consumers and shifting any of their expectations.

Once everyone was listening to the music recorded on vinyl, than it was replaced by audio-tapes and later on by CD. The same with video. The time of VHS cassettes is rapidly coming to an end. DVD-s play the first part and nobody can tell for sure for how long and what will be next.

Being compared with VHS DVD shows no minuses but only pluses and advantages. If once there still was some talk about the battle of the formats then nowadays any of such comparisons are totally meaningless. And if there ever was that battle then DVD fully won it. Well probably the only mines stays with the price but every single the situation is decreasing.

So what's so good about movies on DVD?

Speaking of advantages one should probably start with the quality. Well, it's good, it's really good. Both of the video and the sound. The reason of it is of course the same as with the CDs. It's digital.
Have you ever seen those special offers ' two or more movies on one DVD? Of course the more movies they record on one disk the worse is the quality of each of them, but the point is that on a DVD can be recorded much more information than on any of the previous widely spread information bearers. There are even disks where information is recorded on the both side. Each DVD has a several information layers on it.

All those technical details aren't possibly so important for those who buy movies on DVD. They are interested in concretely what do they get. If it's a license copy (about that they can tell by the price) of come high-rated and high-budget movie then first of all they get premium quality of picture. The colors are true, textures are almost touchable, no blurs, everything's very clear and so on.

Another very important thing about the movie is the sound. On DVD-s as we know the sound is recorded in five and one subwoofer channels. You get total surround the same as in the cinema (of course you'll have to supply you DVD-player with a home theater to get the full pleasure from the movies on DVD).

Bullets are whistling near your ears, wind is hauling somewhere behind your back, cars are driving by your side while you sit in your cozy armchair and sip evening tea.

One more pleasant moment about movies on DVD is that you can watch the foreign movies as in translation on any of a few offered languages so on the language of the original that gives you a chance to feel all the hues of actors play and see the movie just as it was seen by the director. On license DVD-s there's also a function of Multilanguage subtitles. It's very useful for those who study language or have any problems with hearing. Sometimes even the comments of the authors on the different scenes of a movie are recorded in one of the subtitles or soundtracks.

Buying a movie on DVD you often don't only purchase a movie but some additional materials to it either. You can watch 'a movie about the movie', interviews with the authors and actors and lots of other stuff.

And finally movies on DVD and all the additional materials are very easy to operate with. DVD-player holds pause not for only five minutes but for as long as you want, it offers you a list of episodes of a movie and a quick approach to any of them and so on.

But all this refers only to license DVD movies. Buying a pirate copy mind that you're buying the cat in the bag. It can be either be not very bad or really bad.
