Dating chat: pros and cons

Added: 09/13/2006

The Internet has become the hot popular place for smart, eligible people to find romance, and those looking for love are swarming into cyberspace. As a result, many individuals start relationships online with people they have never met and know little about.

In what resembles a scene from a sci-fi movie, people are chatting and dating in virtual rooms across the world. Chat rooms are everywhere, offering something for everyone.

Dating chat is a popular way of getting in touch with singles all over the world. Let's look at some pros and cons of the online dating chat.

Pros:
- Chatting online allows you to get to know people well, before you meet them. This way you have a chance to weed out those, whose interests and lifestyles are not compatible with yours.

- With thousands of people available for online chatting your choice is endless. There is no rejection to deal with, and you can dictate the pace of everything.

- You can contact other singles anonymously avoiding embarrassment if it doesn't work out.

- Online chatting is safe, as you don't have to reveal your real name, location, or telephone number.

- Being able to correspond online encourages you to express your thoughts without feeling awkward.

- Online chats are a good practice for improvising, flirting and refining your communication skills. It's an excellent chance to chat in real time with people who are miles away.

Cons:
- The person at the other end may not be who or what he/she says. Trust your instincts. If anything makes you uncomfortable, walk away for your own safety. For many Internet users chat rooms are a source of entertainment that has nothing to do with a soul mate search. They are having fun playing different roles, changing nicknames and pretending to be something they are not.

- People with communication problems or inferiority complex often frequent chat rooms. Don't be surprised if some people you chat with will refuse to meet you in person. Some are quite happy with online friendship.
- Online chatting is addictive and time-consuming, and one day you might notice that you have spent hours on chatting with people who are not, in fact, looking for a relationship.

- There is danger that getting used to Internet communication you will lose the ability to notice people around you in the real world, while focusing on some imaginary virtual friends.

- It's not very healthy to spend hours glued to a computer screen, while you are missing out on numerous opportunities to get out, get engaged into outdoor activities and meet someone real.

If you decide to give it a try with chat rooms, don't get carried away, don't believe everything you are told, use common sense and a sense of measure, and play it safe.
