Corporate Entertainment

Corporate conventions today require more than just the standard caterer and second-rate comedy show. Today, the planning involved for a major corporate event is often nearly as complex as the subject matter! Booking the right speakers, the right corporate entertainment, the right trainers, and the right caterer can truly make or break the convention.

Obviously, one should take into account the subject matter of the convention itself to best determine the corporate entertainment. Understanding the correlation between the subject and the corporate entertainment is important.

The first thing you should consider is the extent to which you want the corporate entertainment to be a part of the conference. Do you want to have a comedian to simply tell a few jokes after a long day of meetings or do you want an inspirational speaker to integrate his talk with the business at hand? In other words, you need to decide whether you want the corporate entertainment to function at the center or periphery of the business at hand.

Many multi-day conferences book entertainers simply to help the masses unwind after a day of smaller meetings, product demos, and informational speeches. After a long day of sitting through lectures, the participants may appreciate something light in the evening. When conferences are held in areas without much nightlife, an in-house entertainer may be perfect.

When you are simply looking for someone to help the attendees unwind after a long day, your choices for corporate entertainment are broad. You can have comedians, musical acts, dancers, etc. that are simply there to loosen up the crowd. These acts simply serve the purpose of corporate entertainment with no ulterior reason for their inclusion in the conference.

On the other hand, you may want to include entertainers that pass forth a message while they entertain. For example, a motivational speaker during the day may help "rally the troops" so to speak. This speaker can function not only as an outside entertainer but as an important part of the conference itself.

When choosing the right entertainer for your corporate event, it pays to evaluate the sensibilities of the audience. You obviously want to have the best fit for your event and avoid offending or boring anyone. The point, after all, is corporate entertainment.
If you are unsure of the type of crowd to expect, it makes sense to go with entertainment that fits a broader spectrum of people. Since you definitely do not want to offend anyone, you may want to go with a tamer entertainer than one closer to the edge. In the balancing act between boring and offensive, it is usually advised to err on the side of a snoozer!

Once you have decided what type of entertainer you need for the conference, it is important to work out the logistics of his or her act with the environment. For example, you may hire a comedian that specializes in tailoring his or her act to specific environments. If you are organizing a medical supply convention, you can pass this information on to the comedian and he can incorporate a few doctor jokes into his act.

If the act will involve more than just a microphone, it is also important to ensure that the equipment and setting is suitable for the act. You should inquire about the setup that the entertainer needs to adequately perform his or her act. If an act is logistically impossible, there is little one can do to remedy the situation after the fact.
