People who purchase a Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 do so because they want a vehicle that can outperform most popular high performance road cars available anywhere in the world. That the GT-R R34 has been around wearing the same basic bodywork since 1999 reflects just how popular a design this highly individual machine has proved to be. The Skyline GT-R-R34 is intended as a street machine capable of mirroring the explosive performance more normally associated with a race car, except without the temperament. To this end Nissan has been very successful.
When building a car aimed at being considered as one of the fastest means of transport between point A and B, a manufacturer needs to endow their creation with the sort of looks that blatantly expresses itself to anyone in-line-of-sight. However, the Skyline GT-R R34 goes even further than merely looking the part. You can hear its deep barrelled growl three blocks away, so even before you see it, you know something big and powerful is headed your way. Surprisingly the power unit in this exceptionally quick car is just 2.6 litres, with about 280 horsepower on tap, although some sources suggest there are a little more than 300. This power equates to a top speed of 155 mph and 0-60 mph reached in under 5.5 seconds. The beauty of the GT-R R34 however is in its ability to handle tuned power ratings of up to 600 horses.
When it does finally arrive in view no one is going to be disappointed by the appearance of a GT-R R34. The Skyline looks every bit as fast as it is able to travel. Huge scoops and a tall rear spoiler warn you that what you are seeing is the real thing, a genuine super fast road car capable of blasting many wanna-be-quick, into the weeds. The GT-R R34 has so much testosterone bubbling beneath the bonnet that even Mister Universe would feel the pressure of inadequacy in such company.
Performance is not only about how quickly a car can accelerate in a straight line, its about a car having the ride and handling characteristics that allow its driver to navigate around bends, curves and elbows at an incredible rate of knots without breaking out in a sweat. Nissan built into the GT-R R34 such high levels of cornering ability that you can't help wonder why no one else has done the same. The Skyline Gt-R R34 is a safe car, yes it's phenomenally quick, but Nissan has endowed it with the necessary abilities to make it safe as well as super fast.
However, the question is, would you buy one instead of say a Porsche or Ferrari? Would you want to be seen driving a Nissan badge in favour of a Porsche? If life were that simple the answer would be obvious, but people who understand cars would favour the Skyline GT-R R34, especially those discerning drivers who crave individuality and drive-ability. The Nissan can go head to head with any other super fast road car, and in the right hands, is likely to come out on top. In addition the GT-R R34 in no way understates itself, it is meant to be brash and bold, it is meant to make a statement that tells the world Nissan has the engineering skills to produce a vehicle that can accomplish on the road what is today achieved on a race track. Anyone who purchases a Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 is not going to be disappointed, can the same be said about its many competitors?
