The Debate Over Whether Classic Sports Cars Are Meant To Be Driven Or Not

Added: 01/31/2006

Many of the people who care deeply about the restoration and care of classic sports cars are sometimes reticent to drive a classic sports car in public. These people often fear that other drivers on the road may damage the classic sports car in a dangerous and costly accident that can leave a delicate vintage vehicle in a condition so bad that it cannot be easily repaired, or may be permanently and irrevocably damaged. However, many classic sports car owners feel that the only way to truly enjoy a classic car is to take it out on the road.

The people who care deeply about the restoration and care of classic sports cars are sometimes reticent to drive a classic sports car in public for fear that other drivers on the road may damage the classic sports car in a dangerous and costly accident. Every day, accidents on the road happen that may not seriously impair the functioning of robust modern cars, but can leave delicate vintage vehicles like classic sports cars in condition so bad that they cannot be easily repaired, or may be permanently and irrevocably damaged. The fact that classic car enthusiasts are often less than enthusiastic about taking this kind of risk and driving their beloved vehicles in public makes plenty of sense. Indeed, there is little wonder that the people who care so much about their classic sports cars are likely to want to protect each classic sports car in their collection however they can, and a large part of taking car of this kind of car is keeping it safe from the harm that other vehicles can do to it on the roads.

Despite the fact that owners often want to keep classic sports cars in the garage where they cannot be ruined by an unfortunate collision, some owners of classic sports cars feel that the only way to truly enjoy their cars is to take them out on the roads. Some drivers choose to risk it and drive their vintage vehicles on a daily basis. Sometimes, drivers who take their classic sports cars out on public roadways and highways are unaware of the risks involved and are surprised and very upset and shocked if harm comes to their vehicle. However, more often than not, the owners of classic sports cars have thought long and hard about the risks associated with driving their collection of vintage cars in public, and have decided that the joys of taking classic sports cars out on the road more than outweigh the potential costs.

The fact that some people are more than willing to drive their classic sports cars on a four lane highway while other classic sport car owners keep their treasures locked up in a garage all year round is a testament to the fact that no two people who own classic sports cars own their cars for the same reasons or for the same purposes. For many collectors, classic sports cars are works of art similar to a famous painting by Pablo Picasso or a sculpture by Auguste Rodin. These car owners are content merely to look at their vehicles and appreciate them primarily as aesthetic objects. To other collectors, classic sports cars are toys that are meant to be played with at all costs, even if it means that they may end up broken.

There are many different philosophies about the best way to enjoy owning classic sports cars, and there are no clear answers about whether it is more important to preserve a vintage car or to enjoy it to the fullest by driving it regularly. Whichever side of the debate you fall on, it is a good idea to try and consider both arguments before you make your final decision. The more thought you put into whether or not to drive your classic sports cars, the less regret you will experience.
