About Toyota Engines
Since the 1970s Toyota engineers have amazed the world with both petrol and diesel engines that have proved exceptionally reliable. Ask almost anyone in any country about what they know of Toyota engine manufacture, and apart from a shrug, the word reliability will likely be the response. Ask about a Toyota diesel engine and the response will probably be the same plus include something about good economy. As a global vehicle manufacturer Toyota has captured the imagination of millions with the durability of its model ranges. Toyota's deserved fame comes from the renown built up by its most popular models. For example, the rugged Landcruiser is available with either petrol or diesel power, and is undoubtedly one of the most admired off-road vehicles available today. If you regularly travel off-road then you need the reliability offered by a vehicle produced by Toyota. For 2006 a 3.0 common-rail Toyota diesel engine offers torquey performance, whilst the smooth 4.0 V6 petrol might sway irregular off-roaders in another direction. Prior to engine developments for the 2006 range of Landcruisers, this mighty vehicle has been offered with a wide variety of powerful and durable engines including petrol 3.4 and 4.7 together with diesel 3.0 and 4.2 capacities. Some of what Toyota engineers learned by building these great machines was naturally been passed down to vehicles expected to face less demanding terrain.
Little wonder then that Toyota manufactures a Toyota engine for family vehicles with durability as a priority or that this is precisely what Toyota is able to achieve. The Toyota Corolla has been around in numerous guises for more than twenty years, and has often been the world's most popular family car. The latest version of the Corolla in the U.K. market was launched in 2002 and continues to impress the public which is reflected in residuals. The Toyota engine most commonly found is the 1.4 unit although the 1.6 runs it closely. There is also a 1.8 VVT-i on offer which produces a whopping 189 bhp which equates to a top speed of around 140 mph and zero to sixty in about 8 seconds. Two diesel alternatives are also offered a 1.4 D-4D and 2.0 D-4D. Of the two the Toyota diesel engine to offer zippy performance is naturally the 2.0, which punches out a torquey 114 bhp, although don't expect the 1.4 to be a slouch because it isn't and manages a top speed of 112 mph plus expect a figure at the top 50s for miles per gallon. Earlier examples of the Corolla have generally kept within the 1.3, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 categories expected of medium sized vehicles. Again Toyota durability has been a strong reason for buyers to return again and again to this much sought after car.
At the other end of the spectrum Toyota also enjoys recognition as a sportscar maker, with its powerful engines having regularly proved both fast and durable. The latest MR2 1.8 launched in 2000 produces what some might mistake as a barely sufficient 138 bhp. However they would be wrong to condemn the MR2 as an also-ran because it is a very competent sportscar. Top speed is over 130 mph and zero to sixty is achievable in around 7 seconds. The Toyota engine needs to be revved to work well, and if it could talk would probably tell you that it enjoys this sort of treatment.
