You, the Doctor and Pediatric Surgery Treatment -- Mutual ResponsibilitiesOften, when it comes to the necessity to perform a pediatric surgery, moms and dads lose their patience, rush around, not knowing what to do, seek help in wrong places and, as a result, lose precious time. It can cause complications though initially the disease may not be so severe. In most cases such behavior means that parents know little of kids surgery. Nothing scares as much as the unknown. Often it's the doctors` fault: unfortunately, they can't always explain parents what namely happens to their child and what the pediatric surgery treatment is about. It partly refers to pressure of doctors` work, partly to the fact they don't see such conversations with parents as important, and finally sometimes they speak in such peculiar words not everyone can understand.

In the past a belief existed that "a child is a little adult". Consequently, people thought that if a child has a disease that needs surgical treatment, a surgeon who treats adults can fix that well enough. These days you don't need to prove it wrong. More than 50 years ago world kids (pediatric) surgery was defined as a separate medicine division. It became obvious that a child is not "a little adult". In a child's body, due to its continual growth and genesis, all processes run in a way different from adults. Kids can have disease that adults can't have. And even if a child has an "adult disease", its treatment differs a lot from treatment used for adults. That's why children have to be treated by children's surgeons, not adult ones.
All major children's hospitals have pediatric surgery features departments. Such departments also exist in special permanent establishments: oncological, cardiological, neuro-surgical, urological and so on. In minor cities, in regional hospitals they don't always have pediatric surgery departments but in this case some of general (adult) surgeons have training in pediatric surgery, and only those surgeons treat and operate children.
Children's surgeons are trained in the majority of different medical institutes, in advanced medical training establishments and in other educational places for medics. All pediatric surgeons are united in national and multinational associations for doctors and for surgeons. In many large cities there are Children's Surgeons` Societies and Associations, they hold regular meetings where doctors discuss most actual and complicated problems of pediatric surgery. Children's surgeons all over the world exchange useful information and represent their achievements at international conferences that are held all around the world almost every month.
