The first women's world cup was won by the American football team. The competition was held in China in 1991.

The most imposing teams in that period were USA, Germany, Sweden, Norway, China, and also Brazil and Canada. Although the first FIFA women world cup competition was organized only in 1991, the idea came from FIFA official as early as in 1986. One of the most spectacular shows was the final of the FIFA women world cup help in 1999. The host team won the match against China. The game had a dramatic ending. Starting with the 2006 championship, hosted by Russia, the age limit of the players will be 20. In 2008, FIFA is planning to found the under 17 women's world competition. Another important international women football competition is the UEFA women world championship.

This is the most important event of the European women's football. Six championships were already held until this moment. The 1993 edition, hosted by Italy, was won by the Norway team. All the other five editions were won by Germany. Other successful teams are Italy and Sweden. The latest competition was held in 2005 in England, where Germany defeated Norway with a score of 3-1.

Women's football is becoming more and more professional, progressively gaining popularity. At this moment women's football championships are considered to be important sports events all over the world.
