By rights Shinhwa and Ahn Jae Wook are the most popular Korean celebrities ever. The band consists of six members and debuted in 1998. Guys signed the contract with the SM Entertainment label and now they are on the crest of popularity.
"Shinhwa" is the Korean word for story or myth. Here are the members: Eric Moon, Lee Min Woo, Kim Dong Wan, Shin Hye Sung, Jun Jin and Andy Lee. Their first performance took place on Korean music show "KM Music Tank" when they featured their first single "Hae Gyul Sah". Shinhwa has released seven albums of quite mixed styles such as rap, pop, rock, ballad and R&B. These changes in musical styles throughout their career attracted a lot of pop admirers in Korea to them.
In addition, Shingwa is notable for their well-choreographed dance shows in their videos and live concerts. However, many critics believe their English rap needs to be improved in terms of coherence and pronunciation. 2002 was an important year in Shinhwa career when they released their sixth album "Wedding". It hit all large Korean music charts on top places. By 2002, Shinhwa has become the longest boy band in Korea.
Shinhwa has a lot of fans not only in Korea but also across the world. In Korea alone there are seventy thousand official fans and their number is growing. In 2004, Shinhwa was nominated as the Best Artist of The Year and won the contest. They received their first Gayo Daesang Award in Seoul and that same year Shinhwa was awarded Gayo Daejun Award by the SBS channel. As a matter of fact, Shinhwa received more awards than any other band in Korea.
The number of their awards amounts to thirteen, going from different musical contests and stages such as Seoul Gayo Daesang, m.net KMTV Music Video Festival, SBS Gayo Awards, KBS, MBC and Golden Disc Awards. They were nominated and won in the following categories: Best Artist of the Year, Overseas Choice Award, Best Dance Artist and Best Male Artist.
Not only does Shinhwa enjoy great popularity in Korea but also in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Australia and the United States. However, their popularity mostly extends to immigrants from South-Eastern Asia. In 2005, Shingwa held a successful concert in Japan being only the second to BoA in terms of amount of tickets sold.
Another popular male Korean pop singer Ahn Jae-Wook was born in 1971 in Seoul where he spent most of his childhood. He used to play various roles in his local theater and then he decided to be an actor and singer. In 1994, future popular male Korean pop singer graduated from Seoul Arts University and that same year Ahn made his debut in drama "The Song of Blind Bird" based on a real story.
Following several years Ahn Jae-Wook performs roles in dramas until in 1997 he performed in extremely popular "Star In My Heart". In 1998, Ahn Jae-Wook was on the crest of his popularity and took up the leading role in the melodrama "First Kiss". At the same time Ahn Jae-Wook ran his singing career. This male Korean pop singer released albums as follows "Forever" in 1997, "Memories" in 1998, "Thanks" in 1999 and "Red in Ahn Jae-Wook" few years later.
Shingwa and Ahn Jae-Wook are an excellent example of the best male Korean pop singer.
