Medicine provides a lot of information about wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are a type of molars. Molars are the masticatory teeth. They are located in the back part of the jaw. Their function is to chew the food. Molars are divided into the first molars, second molars and third molars. The third molars are also called the wisdom teeth. There may be four third molars: upper left wisdom tooth, upper right wisdom tooth, lower left wisdom tooth, lower right wisdom tooth. Usually a wisdom teeth occuring takes place during the teen years.
Wisdom tooth eruption can be difficult, and when a wisdom tooth is not fully erupted, it is called an impacted one. It is caused by the improper slope of the tooth and the lack of space. Modern people eat softer food than our predecessors did and do not need all their masticatory teeth. So, nowadays the jaw of modern people is smaller than earlier. Quite often there is no place, or not enough space for our wisdom teeth.
There is some research going on about wisdom teeth. Mankind continues its developing and evolution. And some scientists believe that, in the future, people will not have wisdom teeth at all. Nowadays, the growth of wisdom teeth is to be expected. Some people have only one or two wisdom teeth. And, an impacted wisdom tooth happens very often.
What should each person know about wisdom teeth? If you have the impacted wisdom tooth, or teeth, you should know that you face difficulties. First of all, it concerns the impacted wisdom teeth cleaning. It is quite difficult, but very important. In the case of insufficient impacted wisdom teeth cleaning, the accumulated dental deposit will cause some serious dental diseases beginning with caries of the impacted wisdom tooth, or of the next tooth and ending with pericoronitis and a dental cyst.
Sometimes you should consult you dentist who will tell you everything you should know about wisdom teeth, and wisdom teeth cleaning. In the case of the impacted wisdom tooth, your dentist will show you how to clean it or irrigate the space between the impacted wisdom tooth and the gum.
Usually the dentists recommend that their patients should have the impacted wisdom tooth extracted. The thing is, that usually such a tooth cannot fulfill its function, i.e. food masticating, but can cause serious discomfort and some dental disease.
The most frequent one is pericoronitis. It is an infection that occurs in the tissue near the wisdom tooth that is not fully erupted through the gum, and is not correctly located. In this case, the space between the wisdom tooth crown and the gum forms. In this space the dental deposit accumulates because the patient cannot clean it properly on his own. The bacteria that are accumulated in the dental deposit will cause the infection in the surrounding tissue. This infection is called pericoronitis.
The pericoronitis symptoms are the gum sensibility and swelling. Sometimes it causes pain, bad breath, and a foul taste. It is the result of the presence of bacteria.
The dental cyst, however, is not very frequent. It occurs in the tissue near the wisdom tooth. In the case it becomes ablated, then you should make the regular X-ray of that place and the wisdom tooth to control the process, because the cyst may develop again.
If your dentist recommends you to extract your wisdom teeth, he should explain to you all the possible difficulties or consequences. What you should know about wisdom teeth is that it is easier and better to extract a wisdom tooth while you are young because the regenerative process is more effective and much easier for the patient. And the other very important thing is that an X-ray of the wisdom tooth is necessary before and after its extraction.
