IVF will work for women with absent, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. Also it works for cases of unexplained infertility and sometimes is used in combination with ICSI in cases of male infertility.
The first stage of egg retrieval preparation involves, actually creating the eggs. As a woman develops only one egg per month, follicle stimulation is needed. Follicles are tiny structures filled with liquid. They grow on the ovaries and each of them is supposed to have an egg inside. For this purpose, the female patient takes medication that allows developing one or more extra follicles.
Egg retrieval preparation medication often comes in the form of injections done by the woman herself or by her male partner. Usually two different medications are used in egg retrieval preparation but one of them can be replaced by nasal spray in some cases. The first medication goes in use on about the 21st day of the woman's cycle - its name is Lupron. It regulates the pituitary gland's production of FSH and LH. This injection should be given for the sake of egg retrieval preparation for the period of 14 to 25 days. The period will take place on the normal time and a few days after the period starts she'll have to start taking FSH - the second type of medication. It stands for follicle stimulating hormone and will make the ovaries produce more than one egg.
This one comes both as subcutaneous and intramuscular injections. This process is watched closely by professionals who use trans-vaginal ultrasound scans and testing blood hormone levels. When the follicles grow to the necessary size, the patient is injected with HCG, which stands for human chronic gonadotropin, which resembles body's natural stimulus for ovulation. It makes the follicle stimulation go into its final stage and within 36 hours the eggs retrieval will take place.
It is very important that the egg retrieval takes place within this time or less than 34 hours. Follicle stimulation is a vital component of the egg retrieval preparation process, so the medication should be taken strictly according to the doctor's prescription. Besides, any high-impact physical activity should be limited. It might lead to ovaries twisting and follicle rupture and that the last two things you want to happen when it comes to egg retrieval preparation.
The next step of the process is oocyte retrieval. The eggs are now mature and are ready for ovulation. Intravenous sedation is also involved in the procedure, which is all guided by ultrasound. Medication for sedation, nausea and discomfort prevention is also a part of the egg retrieval preparation. Then a needle goes into the vagina and the eggs are removed.
Prevention of ovulation must be used, as in such case all the fussy egg retrieval preparation will go to the dogs and the follicles will have to be grown yet once more. Close ultrasound monitoring as well as timely eggs removal is usually enough good for prevention of ovulation. At this point close medical supervision and responsibility are all that is required for a successful pregnancy process, and it would be a shame to mess it up.
