The profession of cosmetologist or beautician is in high demand today. Many different beauty salons need qualified professionals. Because of this, many beauty schools are increasing the number of programs that they offer for students studying cosmetology.
In fact, the field of cosmetology has three basic subcategories, so there are three different programs. Of course, in some beauty schools you will find more programs, but these three are basic. Major specialties in this field are manicurist, esthetician, and hair stylist.
Professionals of the first category take care of a client's nails. Of course, some special knowledge is needed here, but of all the other courses, the manicurist program contains the smallest number of medical courses. That is why these classes are pretty easy and why they are shorter than other specialties in some schools.
The second specialty in the field of cosmetology is esthetician. This profession provides clients with skin care. This needs some advanced knowledge of skin analysis techniques. Special medical courses like pharmacology are also needed.
Some schools also offer the esthetician specialty of medical esthetician. This specialist offers pre and post operative care for patients who have had plastic surgery. Of course, this specialty needs more knowledge of medicine. Because of this many school program can be different for medical esthetician than a regular esthetician.
The third category is hairstylist or hairdresser. It doesn't require as much medical knowledge as a medical esthetician, but it may be harder. There are many hair stylist duties that you will have to master during the course. It isn't just cut and shape heads of the clients, the hair stylist duties go deeper than that. A hair stylist performs cutting, coloring, styling, curling, and many other hair stylist duties. Special hair and scalp analysis are also part of hair stylist duties because he or she must be able to handle the entire possible problem with the hair and the head. A hair stylist must make the client's hair beautiful and keep it in a healthy condition. It isn't as simple as it seems at first.
Because of the large number of duties that a hair stylist has to perform, he or she usually has an assistant to help with some of the simpler tasks. For example, they help to shampoo and dry hairs of the clients . They also help getting client's ready for styling. Working as an assistant or technician is a great chance to learn all of the nuances of the hair dresser profession by practicing. That is why many beauty school graduates work as assistants at the beginning of their careers.
These are only three major specialties in cosmetology and today you can easily find more. Check all of the available beauty schools. The number of courses is increasing every year, so you will definitely find the specialty and classes that are best for you. All the information about school programs can usually be found on the websites of the beauty schools.
