Today, there are many different beauty salons and because of that the profession of cosmetologist, also called beautician is in great demand. Therefore, more and more schools and institutions offer different programs and courses.
The profession of cosmetologist usually includes three sub-categories: esthetician, manicurist, and hair stylist. To master each of these specializations, you will need a special course, so if you wish to become a cosmetologist, you have to make a choice.
The first sub-category of cosmetology is esthetician. The major task of this specialist is to take care of the client's skin. This includes all types of massages and special treatments. This means that an esthetician has to have good knowledge of the skin. Therefore, in many institutions, esthetician programs include courses in skin analysis and skin defects treatment. In most cases, estheticians also perform hair removal with simple techniques of waxing and shaving. To use more advanced techniques of hair removal, it is better to use the services of other specialists. For example, in many beauty salons, you can use an electrologist who removes unwanted hair with an electrolysis device.
Sometimes you can use a medical esthetician. This specialty requires a medical education and the main task of these professionals is to provide the needed pre and post operative care for cosmetic surgery patients. But, that is a special sector of cosmetology and not all the schools offer such programs because most of them have regular non medical courses.
Another sub-category of cosmetology is manicurist. Specialists in this field take care of the nails. This includes special procedures to make nails stronger and healthier. And of course manicures, pedicures, and nail extensions are usually used with this specialty. In most cases, you don't need special medical classes to be a manicurist.
A hair stylist specializes in cutting, styling, and coloring the client's hair. Although there are hair stylists that perform all the operations themselves, they usually have assistants to make their work easier. For example, they have help with hair coloring. Hair color technician tasks are to prepare everything for the procedure and to bleach and frost hair. A hair stylist can also tint and dye heads of the clients or that can be part of the hair color technician tasks.
To become a good hair stylist, it is necessary to work for sometime as an assistant performing all of the hair color technician tasks. Doing these entire hair color technician tasks the mastery of different techniques of the hair stylist craft. Many beauty schools offer hair stylist courses and there are even schools that are oriented towards hair dressing and coloring. Because there are such a variety of beauty schools, it should be easy to find the specialty that you want. However, to become a professional, you need a lot of experience in the field, so it isn't as simple as it seems at first.
