Video game designers work can be defined as software developing (either individual or business) and creating video or computer games. Video game designers also develop layout concept and gameplay. Sometimes video game designers work is focused on a certain type of the game, such as Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft Xbox. Video game designers work may also include the development of various systems.
It is necessary to mention the fact that video game designers work may be quite different. Some designers specialize on certain types of the games, such as FPSs and RPGs. Some are engaged in transferring games from one system to another one. Some designers are busy with translating the games from one language to another, for example, from Japanese to English. Some designers fulfill different types of software development work in the playfield design.
There are three main types of video game developers. They are small independents, in-house developers and third-party developers. Developers employ a staff of testers, producers, sound engineers, artists, game designers and programmers.
Video game development in the United States is performed in a rather casual manner. The most common work attire is sandals and T-shirts. The work hours of the designers are rather flexible. The amount of working hours is usually 40. Traditionally, the developers start their work at 10 a.m. It may seem for outsiders that the employees are paid fairly well for such an easy job.
The most part of game developers overwork their employees. ?Crunch time? is the time when the management realizes that the team is not going to meet a deadline. This prompts another problem: the publishers are not going to pay the developers till the task is complete. It makes the risk that the company will not be able to pay its employees on time as well.
In such cases the management usually starts the so-called ?crunch time? making the employees work for 60-80 hours a week including the weekends. The management considers that it will help the team catch up with the plan.
But it is necessary to mention that employees of the United States are not paid for the overtime work while crunching. It is explained by the fact that the developers hire salaried employees, those who are classified as ?professionals? and are not paid by each hour. Thus, most state laws do not apply the overtime pay.
Much ink has been spilled over the crunch time in 2004 when a manifesto on the topic was published. The manifesto railed against the crunch time cruelty. It was posted by an anonymous person who claimed himself to be an employee`s fiancé. The employee used to work for a company called Electronic Arts. The man said that the life of his girl-friend was destroyed by the work policy of the company. The manifest provoked a lot of debates in the industry. But the situation remained the same till March 2005. At that time Electronic Arts announced that it was going to pay some of the employees for the overtime.
