Vegetarian trends vary throughout the world

Added: 01/27/2006

Speaking about vegetarian trends it is necessary to mention the recent vegetarian trends, which can be diametrically opposite in different parts of the world. For example, Asian countries witness a great decrease in vegetarian population. It is explained by the processes of westernization and industrialization. In contrast to Asian countries, the Western world witnesses a great increase in the number of those who keep to the vegetarian diet.

Speaking about vegetarian trends, it should be noted that there are different varieties of vegetarianism. There are several practices of vegetarianism. They are as follows. The first one is lacto vegetarianism. These vegetarians do not eat eggs or meat but eat dairy products. Most lacto vegetarians are found among Indians and in the classical Mediterranean lands. The second group is called lacto-ovo-vegetarianism. The representatives do not consume meat but do eat eggs and dairy products. This type of vegetarianism is widely spread in the Western world. Ovo vegetarianism is another type of vegetarianism. These vegetarians do not eat dairy products and meat but eat eggs. And the last variety is called veganism. Those who keep to it avoid eating any animal products, including cheese, milk, eggs and sometimes even honey. Representatives of this vegetarianism are often called dietary vegans. There are some of them who avoid using such animal products as cosmetics and leather, and are called vegans. Speaking about vegetarian trends, it is relevant to mention the existence of some vegetarian practices, which are less common. One of them is called raw diet. It involves vegan food which is not heated above 46.7°C or 116°F. It is allowed to warm the food slightly or to eat it raw, but it is not allowed to cook it. Raw foodists are sure that cooking destroys some portions of nutrients and enzymes. Nevertheless, there are some raw foodists who think that certain types of food get more bio-available when they are warmed a little. They say the process of warming softens the food. Such beliefs more than negate the destruction of enzymes and nutrients. Another group of raw foodists is called 'living foodists'. They activate the enzymes by means of soaking the food in the water for a while before consumption. There are also some raw foodists who consume organic food only. Speaking about vegetarian trends we can't but mention some recent vegetarian trends. It is interesting to know that 70% of the world vegetarians are represented by Indian vegetarians who are primarily lacto-vegetarians. Vegetarianism popularity in the country is very high. Vegetarianism population makes about 20-30% of the whole population in India. As for occasional meat-eaters, they comprise about 30% of the Indian population. One of the most significant recent vegetarian trends is the decrease of vegetarianism in most Asian countries. It happens due to the intense westernization and industrialization. There is one famous vegetarian group called the Hunzas that lives near Himalayas. There is a belief that these people tend to live to one hundred years old. They live such a long life thanks to their vegetarian diet. In contrast to Asian countries, the Western world observed a huge increase of vegetarianism population in the 20th century. It is considered to be a result of environmental, ethical and nutritious concerns. It is considered to be a great increase if compared to 1950 when vegetarianism was very rare.
