Lost in a sea of shampoo products?

Added: 01/27/2006

There are certain things in people?s lives without which they would no be able to stay on top. Shampoo is an example. It has become an essential item in our bathrooms. Despite the variety of shampoo products, it should be selected with great care. What should we remember to make the best use of shampoo products? And, interestingly, how did our ancestors manage without a shampoo?

It is well-known that a beautiful person is more confident and successful. However, it is not enough to be born handsome. A person should take a good care of him/herself - stay healthy, wash oneself regularly, and lead a healthy way of life. And having a healthy hair is definitely the first step to success.

Our grandparents believed that to have gorgeous hair and get rid of dirt and grease, one had to comb it a hundred times a day. Nowadays, on the contrary, beauticians maintain that we should avoid combing it very often, as combing can damage the hair skin. Also, they insist that regular washing is not at all harmful, as it helps hair grow fast. Washing out grease and dead cells removes fat hormones, which can damage hair follicles.

The shampoo history started in Europe. Shampoo was invented about a century ago in Germany. The two types of known shampoos included liquid and powder shampoo. Modern shampoo products are more sophisticated and diverse. There are shampoos for dry and oily hair; for fine and color-treated hair; and some shampoos help fight dandruff.

It is usually not recommended to wash your head with 2-in-1 shampoos, which contain both as shampoo and a conditioner. 2-in-1 shampoos can be used, for instance, during long family trips, when it is inconvenient to carry many bottles. Otherwise, shampoo and conditioners should be selected specifically for each hair type.

Besides, it should be remembered that using the same shampoo for all family members is a bad idea. Many families, however, buy the same shampoos for everyone, thinking there is nothing harmful about it.

Certain ingredients in shampoo products help retain moisture, restore hair structure, and make it shining and voluminous. Also, shampoo protects hair from harmful sun rays. So, good shampoos are usually multifunctional.

Knowing how to wash hair is important. Medics and cosmetologists say that regular hair wash is normal. In fact, by washing hair we clean the hair skin, where most dirt is concentrated. Thus, it is recommended that shampoo is first applied on head skin; as you rinse it, shampoo goes down all over to hair ends. The second recommendation is to avoid applying too much shampoo, as it can destroy the protective head skin layer and precludes it from shining. So, it is best that you wash hair twice at a time. The third rule is to rinse hair and head skin with cold water after washing it with shampoo. This will stimulate capillaries and will keep hair clean and healthy for a longer time. Fourthly, it is a good idea to massage one's head. This, too, stimulates a blood supply and renders hair healthy.

Certainly, a great amount of shampoo products, among which one can find even a solid form shampoo, may be confusing. In this case, it can be great to talk to your beautician or a doctor - they will help determine your hair type, diagnose your hair problems and decide how to cure it. Also, pay attention to the ingredients contained in shampoo products to determine whether it suits our hair type.
