What is the proper definition of a mental health crisis?

Added: 10/10/2005

It is not that easy to determine factors that can seriously affect mental health, things can seriously vary from a person to person. But there are definitely certain sorts of activity that can cause a mental health crisis. And in cases when such a crisis occurs, it should be treated accordingly, otherwise this crisis and its complications can lead to very serious mental health disorders.

There are many different sorts of activities and certain professions that involve a certain risk for health. But in many cases a potential risk can be involved even where it is not so obvious and where you do not expect it. In fact, any kind of work that involves intense intellectual activity can lead to different mental heath problems.

And in rare cases such an activity can even lead to a mental health crisis. So how can be this condition determined? And what is the proper definition for the term "mental health crisis" itself?

First of all, it is necessary to emphasize that such situations with a mental health crisis are pretty rare and in most cases people experiencing crisises are likely to harm themselves. Cases of aggressive behavior with possibility of harming other people are even rarer.

Most of the health organizations define a mental health crisis as a condition when a person can not appropriately control his (her) thought, feelings and actions. And this condition of mental health crisis is usually expressed in suicidal thoughts (in some cases suicidal behavior can be observed in a person).

A person can also show irrational thoughts and bizarre actions. In such cases, all these thoughts and actions should be taken very seriously, no matter how bizarre they look. In such a condition a person can be very hazardous to him (her) and completely lose the feel of a surrounding reality. If all the signs or even any of them are present, then active measures have to be taken immediately.

If you are observing a person in a similar condition, expressing signs of a mental health crisis, first of all, try to ensure the safety of all people surrounding him (her). After that try to create some sort of private atmosphere and calm the person. If a person has a weapon or is threatening to injure other people, immediately contact ambulance and police department, also try to provide them with the full information on situation you are in with a person experiencing mental problems, try to describe his(her) actions if it`s possible. And at the same time try to stay as calm as possible and calmly talk to the person. Person probably will feel very frightened, so explain him (her) everything you are about to do to clear any possible uncertainty. Try to perform everything in a very calm manner.

After the mental health crisis situation is settled a person needs to be presented to a mental health adviser or any other mental health professional for further treatment. People who have ever shown any signs of mental heath crisis should be observed by a mental health specialist regularly and all the complications have to be treated accordingly (special mental health therapy needs to be applied), otherwise, they can easily cause serious mental health disorders.

In fact, there is no certain definition for the mental health crisis and there is no determine course of actions but, in any case, all actions have to be taken very carefully and oriented on making a person experiencing mental health crisis calm.
