Although the history of modern windsurfing can be investigated since the second part of the 20th century its original forms prints were rooted in Hawaii islands 1500 years ago.

Windsurfing is comparatively rather young sport. Its modern history is traced into citizens of Southern California. Two names are left in sport history forever: Jim Drake (a sailor) and Hoyle Schweitzer (a surfer). That was a successful combination of their two sports in hybrid-like new one. The name of new born sport was logically picked up by its creator Schweitzer. Some years of development brought the windsurfing classes ranging and a great deal of world windsurfing championships.

From the early beginning the sport essence was clear: the task of the sailor was rig support and control at its titling in free directions. The offered method allowed steering without rudder use. The basic and the only one equipment for windsurfing is surf board. Today the choice of board type depends on windsurfing classes. But not so long ago in early 1970's the only one board acceptable for new sport was Schweitzer's Windsurfer that occupied the line of mass producing. The main advantages of that polyethylene boards were their durability and universality of usage levels: both beginners and experienced surfers preferred them.

The late 1970's is the time of mass windsurfing fever in Europe. The sport experts consider that Europeans sport attention is concerned more in individual than in team sports. Since the period the wave of mass individual windsurfing boards production gets spread. The production leading tends were intercepted by European lines and keep these position till the present time. In the course of the time their design has changed significantly changed then became much shorter.

The stage of windsurfing top development is traced into the early 1980's when the circle of endless competitions and windsurfing classes ranging got ran. The time is simultaneous to Professional World Cup birth. Finally the sport was awarded with Olympic status that brought natural emergence of such categories as Olympic windsurfing class, formula windsurfing class and others.

Memorable event was carved forever in Los Angeles, 1984. New technologies and special equipment design made it possible a new world speed record in windsurfing history 36 knots. The records speeding up passed through the points of 40 and 45.34 knots.

Windsurfing prerequisites at the Olympic Games in 1912 influenced the sport development much. Today for millions of fans windsurfing classes are not significant at all. The main purpose is speed and technique that from fan's point of view can create fashionable image and cool appearance. Windsurfing association got close connection with luxuriant lifestyle.

Today the world championships program is presented also with wavesailing as one of windsurfing derivations. It is new challenge that steadily and confidently is speeding up. The race and wave criterions determine present competition program variations.
