The Mountain Bike World Championship overview

Mountain biking sports began to develop in the late 60s - early 70s. At that time, there existed no such thing as a mountain bike. The first ancestors of contemporary mountain bikes were based on road cruisers, for instance, those produced by Schwinn. Roughly two decades later, the debut Mountain Bike World Championship took place in the United States.

The first Mountain Bike World Championship held at the professional level took place in Durango, USA in 1990. This event is traditionally organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale, and the winner is awarded the right to have the rainbow jersey on for a whole year. In contrast to other UCI-sanctioned events, the Mountain Bike World Championship is organized by national teams.
