From the beginning of mankind, human beings haven't been separable from nature. Constantly we are subjected to various influences of environment and many of them are healing. Physical factors applied by contemporary general physiotherapy follow natural ones which have been studied by science and specially changed to meet patients' requirements. General physiotherapy has long history dating back many hundreds of years.
Let's see in particular the mechanisms of classic physiotherapy. One of the most interesting branches of general physiotherapy is electrotherapy. There are the following types of electrotherapy: galvanization - is application of continuous current of small strength (up to 50 ma) and small voltage (30 - 80 V). Sophisticated physiotherapy equipment allows treating many diseases caused by bad blood circulation, phagocytosis, metabolism etc. Electrical treatment is prescribed to treat diseases of the peripheral nervous system (neuralgia, neuritis, radiculitis); functional and organic diseases of the central nervous system. However, there are some significant contraindications: malignant neoplasms, inclination to bleeding, fever, suppurative inflammations and current intolerance.
Iontophoresis is a method of simultaneous stimulation of the patient with continuous current and with a certain medicine injected into tissues with current. The mechanism of iontophoresis consists in the following: continuous electrical current promotes growth of reactivity of the body. Iontophoresis influences on the organism with a medicine that is in the ionized state and therefore more active. Prescriptions: affection of the peripheral nervous system including traumatic nerve injuries; functional diseases of the central nervous system; diseases of the cardiovascular, alimentary, musculoskeletal systems and skin diseases. Iontophoresis has the following contraindications: malignant neoplasms, inclination to bleeding, fever, suppurative inflammations and current intolerance.
Another interesting method of general physiotherapy is faradization or application of low frequent alternating current. Faradization is prescribed to decrease excitability of nervous cells promoting pain decrease. Faradization helps increase metabolism in the nervous tissue and it increases regeneration ability of the nervous tissue. Some physiotherapy schools prescribe faradizations to treat affection of the peripheral motor neuron (facial nerve neuritis caused by poliomyelitis). However, there are contraindications such as spastic paralysis.
