The Most Popular Female Turkish Pop Musicians

Female Turkish pop musicians rank right up there with female pop stars from Pakistan: you know they're out there, but you've never heard of them! Well, believe it or not, there ARE female Turkish pop musicians in the world. Some of them are Ajda Pekkan, Sertab Erener. They took part in "Eurovision". And for example Sertab Erener was the first on Eurovision Song Contest 2004. Sertab Erener was the first from female Turkish pop musicians who sang the song in English in "Eurovision".

There are some female Turkish pop musicians who are famous over the world.

Sertab Erener is one of the famous female Turkish pop musicians. She was born in Istanbul in 1964. She started her professional carrier in the music world with the studying in Istanbul Municipality Conservatory and then she continued in Turkish Government Conservatory. After graduating from the conservatory Sertab with her group began to sing in popular clubs in Istanbul.

In 1980s, she worked with Sezen Aksu, the singer, who was called a queen of Turkish pop music.


Sertab is familiar well with "Eurovision'. She twice took part in Turkish finals of the song choice in 1989 and in 1990. In Europe she is famous for her songs which she sang with Mando (Mando is a singer who was a representative from Greece in 2003 during Eurovision Song Contest).

Besides Sertab got awards Sony Music for the fact that her albums were sold in millions of copies.

She is one of the most popular female Turkish pop musicians. She has already seven albums. Her concerts and tours attract attention of fans from Turkey and from other different countries.

Turkish Radio Corporation offered Sertab to be a representative from Turkey during Eurovision Song Contest 2003. But the song for this event must be in English. Sertab accepted this offer and created three different songs. Turkish Radio Corporation chose the song "Every Way That I Can".

Many Turkish people were against the fact that this song was in English. But the time showed that Turkish Radio Corporation made a right choice. Sertab Erener says that the song "Every Way That I Can" is the song about a woman who used any possibility to make her lover come back.

So, Turkey took the first place during Eurovision Song Contest 2003. One must say that it was for the first time when the Turkish representative sang in English. Of course, she was happy. Everybody even the Turkish president congratulated her on her victory.

Thanks to Sertab's victory Eurovision Song Contest 2004 was held in Turkey.

One more popular singer among female Turkish pop musicians is Ajda Pekkan. She is famous in different countries, too. She worked with Patricia Cass, Demise Roussos and Chico & The Gypsies.

Ajda was born in 1946 in Istanbul. She wanted to be a singer and at the age of sixteen she started to sing in different clubs of the native city, including a famous club "Cati" with a group Los Catikos

In 1963, Ajda won in a cinema-contest of the famous magazine "Ses Magazine" and got her first role in the cinema. At five years she had roles in forty five films. In 1964, her new song "Goz Goz Degdi Bana" appeared. In 1970, she recorded many singles and two albums "Ajda Pekkan Vol.III" (1972) - "Ajda" (1975). Later a disc "Superstar" appeared.
In 1980, Ajda represented Turkey during "Eurovision'. But she took only the fifteenth place.
