Although rarely used in contemporary Western theatre, masks were essential in Greek and Roman drama and the commedia dell'arte and are used in most African and Oriental theatre. The masks of tragedy and of comedy, as used in ancient Greek drama, are in fact the universal symbols of the theatre. Because the mask's expression is unchanging, the character's fate or final expression is known from the beginning, thereby removing one aspect of suspense. The mask shifts focus from the actor to the character and can thus clarify aspects of theme and plot and give a character a greater universality. In large theatres masks can also aid in visibility.
A woman who possesses the makeup artistry can look much better than a girl beautiful from nature with a wrong applied makeup. So what is the make up artistry? It is high art. I am not talking about the procedure of applying make up that we do every day, but I am talking about the make-up as The Art that we can watch on a theatre stage , on TV and movie stars or on top models. It`s the art of creating special effects and images. The makeup can be dramatic or comic, impudent and shy, very simple and hardy visible, or bright and alluring. The Makeup artistry can astonish and surprise. Make-up is a very delicate thing. It can emphasize the beauty of a human being; hide small drawbacks, if you know how to apply it correctly. But incorrectly applied makeup can make you look ugly and stress your drawbacks. The make-up should always be on occasion and, of course,it should suit you.
You can`t apply a very bright makeup, if you are at your working place. But your makeup must be bright, if you are going to the party. Perhaps not everyone can possess the makeup artistry skills, but at least everyone can learn to apply the make-up correctly, everyone can learn to choose the right colors that will suit you and learn to hide disadvantages and emphasize advantages. Only creative people with good imagination can become professional makeup artists.
Makeup artists are people who possess the talent to find rare beauty in simple things and extraordinary in ordinary. Professional makeup artists know all about colors, tones and shades. Where can you meet professional makeup artists? You can find them on different fashion shows, in the theatres and the TV studios, in beauty salons, on photo shoots and runway shows. Makeup artists are always the part of great events, such as wedding, different Academy Awards.

It takes many hours to apply a makeup and create special effects, like making an actor older or younger, adding scars and making someone look like a monster, when shooting films.
