The Importance of Dental Care for Pets

Added: 01/18/2006

If only my dog Max could brush his teeth. I tell you, that animal has some serious bad breath. But worse than that -- Max, and a lot of others dogs and cats can suffer from the tooth pain as people do. Unfortunately, not all the people know that they should care about their pets oral hygiene. Veterinarian sometimes neglects the oral examination. But it is regular dental care for pets that is able to diagnose any pathology in time and allow taking the appropriate measures for its elimination. Today many veterinary clinics offer a spectrum of dental care for pets.

You should bring your pet to the veterinary dentist from the moment of the second dentition. Mostly a second dentition is insensibly and does not cause any troubles. But rarely a temporary tooth remains. Usually it can happen with canines when a permanent tooth grows near the temporary one and does not eject it. In this case the temporary teeth can cause many different anomalies in teeth position. In such a case it is necessary to extract the temporary teeth. Otherwise, it will result in very serious problems even in purulent periodontal disease.

For cats and dogs of average and old age the first signal to visit your dentist is the bad breath of your pet. Some people think that bad breath is caused by their disordered stomach. It is absolutely false. Their esophagus is a compressed tube without any lumen. So, bad breath can occur only in the case of eructation. It means that any continuous bad breath comes from the oral cavity of the pet. Its cause is putrefaction. In this case the detailed dental examination is necessary.

The proper detailed dental investigation needs sedative. Otherwise, it is impossible, because the process is unpleasant and even painful for the pet. Moreover, we should care about the dentist safety.

Usually the putrefactive odor is caused by the bacteria that are accumulated in the dental calculus. It is the result of saliva minerals deposit and dental deposit of brown or gray-green color. Sometimes the amount of dental calculus is so great that it lays as a monolith from the second or third premolar to the last back molar. If the dentist removes such the dental calculus the middle teeth may fall out because the dental calculus held them as an orthodontic appliance.

The dental calculus is a perfect environment for different bacteria. If it occurs under the gum it is not visible but it irritates the gum, provides the bacteria growth and different inflammations. It is the main cause of periodontal diseases and the teeth loosening.

So, now we know that dental care for you pet is very important. But what are the main measures of dental care for pets today?

Surely, first of, all it is regular visits to the veterinary dentist as we have already said and proven.

The next important dental care for pets is pets oral hygiene. The master of the pet should do it regularly. Today pets oral service offers us the following main instruments: a rubber brush for gum massage, a tooth-brush and tooth-paste. A rubber brush can be put on the finger and it helps to rub in the gum the specially recommended medications.

A toothbrush differs by its size, form and bristle. Your dentist recommends you the appropriate one. The oral cavity processing may be daily if it is therapeutic. But usually dental care for pets allows weekly processing. The proper feeding is also a dental care for pets. First of all, it concerns bones. Your cat or dog can like them but their parodentium is loaded, their gum is damaged and sometimes even they can fracture their teeth or rub them.

Another dental consideration for pets consists in how well they chew their food and what food they eat. Just like humans, you should exclude any sweets, chocolate, cakes, yoghurt, and sweet cookies in the diet of your pet.
Vitamins and minerals are also the dental care for pets. Please, consult your veterinary and select the appropriate vitamins and minerals and its volume for your pet individually according to its physiology.

And last but not the least recommendation. Please, visit the dentist with your pet!
