The Grey Cup the event in Canadian football

Added: 12/18/2005

The first Grey Cup was introduced by the Canadian Governor General in 1909 to award the winning Canadian amateur football rugby team. By this time rugby in Canada had become strikingly different from the rugby union from which it derived. Eventually, the Grey Cup was included into the property of the Football League of Canada.

In Canadian football two teams, twelve players each, try to win territorial control of a football field of 110 yards long and 65 yards wide, with end areas 20 yards deep.
The sport shares its origins with American football. Although both sports have similar rules and gameplay, they are still distinct and have a lot of differences.

Canadian football competitions are held at various levels in Canada. Amateur Canadian football is under the auspices of Football Canada. The university level football, at which 27 teams compete in four conferences, is governed by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS); the CIS victor is given the Vanier Cup.

Canadian football at junior level is played by scores of high school students prior to joining the university squads. There are three divisions of 18 total junior teams competing for the cup called Canadian Bowl.

Semi-professional-level leagues have gained the popularity in past years, and the Alberta Football League has become especially popular. The governing body of semi-professional leagues is the Canadian Major Football League.

The oldest and most prestigious trophy in professional Canadian football is awarded to the winner of nine-team professional league - Canadian Football League, and is called the Grey Cup.
The Grey Cup bears the name of both the main trophy awarded to the winning team and the championship of the CFL.

In recent times, the Canadian Football League was offered to replace the name the Grey Cup with that of a corporate sponsor. However, a large number of CFL conservatives have rejected to the idea, asserting that the league shouldn?t exchange a national, historical treasure for temporary profit.
