Femina Miss India called after a magazine

Added: 12/20/2005

The Femina Miss India is called so because it was founded by the Femina magazine in 1964. It is necessary to say that the Femina Miss winners often become the winners on such international beauty pageants as the Miss Universe, the Miss World and the Miss Earth. Very often the winners of the contest become popular film stars, and namely actresses and producers.

The Femina Miss India is an annual beauty pageant held in India. The pageant was founded in 1964 by the Femina magazine. That is why it is referred to as the Femina Miss India. Before the pageant appeared Miss India was selected by Eve's weekly. It was the Indian press that chose the winners of the contest. Femina Miss India winners began to take part in the Miss Universe pageant since 1952. Since 1959 Miss India has been a participant of the Miss World. Speaking about Femina Miss India, it would fair to say that that the winner of the contest has always been sent to the Miss Universe while the runner-up was sent to the Miss World pageant. As for the Miss Asia, Miss Asia Pacific and Miss International, the second runner-up usually attended them. In 1995 the Femina Miss India had some changes. Before 1995 the jury chose the only winner, "Miss India". Since 1995 they decided to choose three equal winners who would represent the country at different international pageants. So, there were such statuses as Miss India Asia-Pacific, Miss India World and of course Miss Universe. In 2002 the third winner was sent not to the Miss India Asia-Pacific, but to the Miss Earth Pageant which was formed some time before. 1994 was a very successful year for the Indian pageant industry. That year both the Miss Universe and the Miss World were won by the participants of the Femina Miss India. It is worthy to say a few words about 2000 when all three international pageants were won by the Femina Miss India winners. Speaking about the Femina Miss India winners, the following names are to be mentioned. Juhi Chawla had been in the limelight for more than 15 years by the time when she became the winner of the contest. The girl got famous when she won the Miss India pageant in 1984. In 1986 she debuted in a film. The film was called "Sultanat". But Juhi became a true star in 1989 thanks to the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak where she played with Aamir Khan. After that she played with Shah Rukh Khan. She managed to win the trophy of Filmfare Best Actress. In the 90's the girl became a producer. Soon Juhi together with Shah Rukh Khan and Aziz Mirza founded a production company. Now Juhi is married to an industrialist and has a son. Another winner of the contest is Sushmita Sen who won the Miss Universe title in 1994. She was a dark horse who won the race. After the contest the girl tried to enter Bollywood. Her attempts were a failure. Sush was considered to be too tall for being an actress. Nevertheless, the desire of the girl to become an actress was so strong that she decided to prove that she could be a success in filming. And she really was when she was noticed in the superhit of David Dhawan. Soon Sush became a very successful and wanted actress. As for the private life, it is possible to mention the fact that the girl adopted a child named Renee. Nafisa Joseph is the winner of the contest in 1997. At the Miss Universe pageant she pronounced a speech which impressed the judges. The girl told that it is unjust to bring a child into the world and not be able to offer him peace. In 1999 she was invited as a judge to MTV as VJ Hunt.
