The Endometriosis Description and a Possible Reason for its Occurrence

Added: 12/21/2005

Knowledge about endometrium and the menstruation mechanism assist in understanding such a female disease as endometriosis. Though the endometriosis description was made in detail, the scientists cannot give the full explanation of the reasons. With endometrial tissue changes that occur periodically, the cells of endometrium began to menstruate and in the case with endometriosis these cells appear in the places and organs that they do not usually live.

Between all the frequently spread female diseases endometriosis takes the third place after inflammatory diseases of pelvic organs and hysteromyoma. Endometriosis often happens to women of reproductive age. Only in the USA more than 1 million of women suffer from this disease. Endometriosis is one of the enigmatic illnesses, because many mechanisms that cause it are unknown and they are not investigated totally. Endometriosis description was made long time ago, but the real reasons of the disease have not been discovered and proved as of yet.

Almost every woman knows about endometrium and what role it plays in the process of menstruation, but not all of them are aware of problems that arise with endometrium functions. Endometriosis description makes it clear for understanding.

Endometriosis is characterized by appearing the cells of endometrium (mucous membrane lining the uterus) in the places where they should not be: fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus wall, peritoneum, urinary bladder, rectum and other organs. This accumulation of cells is called sometimes endometriosic tissue, and these cells begin to function periodically like endometrium. In other words they begin to menstruate.

The most popular theory of occurring endometriosis is the theory of retrograde menstruation. During menstruation the blood together with pieces of endometrium are spilt into the fallopian tubes and abdominal cavity. In the abdominal cavity and/or in other organs where these pieces may occur they can remain and begin to function. Naturally the blood spills outside from the uterus.

Endometrial tissue changes periodically and in the area of endometriosic tissue, a micro-hemorrhage takes place and the inflammatory process occurs during the menstruation period. But the main question is why not all the women suffer from this problem though retrograde menstruation occurs pretty often once women have normal uterine tubes potency.

The possible explanations are the following. First of all, it is connected with peculiarities of the fallopian tubes; therefore the abdominal cavity receives more blood than it usually does. The possible reasons may be heritable susceptibility and immune disorders.

In endometriosis description the immune system plays an important role. It provides the support of the tissue structure of the body. During the lifetime there can be some problems with the structure, including oncological problems. However, the cells of the immune system trace the bad cells and destroy them. The fragments of tissues that occur in the abdominal cavity with the menstrual blood are destroyed in the same way. If the immune system fails to do it the cells remain and give rise to endometriosis. Thus, it is useful to know the endometriosis description, possible reasons of its occurrence and its symptoms. Though the exact reasons of the disease are not still determined and that is why it is rather hard to prevent it, but if a patient applies for assistance immediately, a lot of problems can be solved, without the risk of long-term damage to the body.
