Slouching shoulders, scoliosis and posture support. What does that all mean?
Slouching shoulders is a result of poor muscle-development in the shoulders, but can also be caused by curvature of the spine.
Defects in posture support can be divided as follows: infringements of a posture in frontal (vertical), sagittal (horizontal) plane and both planes simultaneously. For each kind of infringement of a posture it is typical their own position of the backbone, scapulas, and basin. Preservation of a pathological posture is possible owing to the certain condition of the ligaments and muscles.
Deviation of the lower backbone is called a scoliosis. Deviation at the top of the backbone is called a stoop, a round back, roundly-concave back, a flat back, flatly-concave back.
The reasons why this happens are related to curvature of the spine that can be both congenital and acquired. The congenital reasons of a curvature of the spine belong to infringements of normal intra-uterine development that leads to underdevelopment of vertebras, to formation of wedge-shaped and additional vertebras & other pathologies.
The acquired reasons of curvature of the spine are the following: bone or muscle disease (such as rickets, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, pleurisy, radiculitis), and traumas (fractures of spinal column). Wrong position of a body owing to physiological features of a person (flat-foot, different length of the legs or absence of one of them, a squint or short-sightedness. Because of this a person is compelled to accept the wrong stance while sitting or standing at work) and is the reason why a curvature of the spine develops.
Also the reason why curvature of the spine appears can be due to the physical nature of the work performed by a person. For example if he or she is constantly sitting in one position (for example, working at a table with your head constantly inclined or sitting incorrectly in a chair). One more reason of the development of spinal curvature is muscles. The backbone can be bent because of different muscle development which can be caused by disease (a unilateral paralysis, rheumatic diseases). Contributing moments for development of a spinal curvature are a poor diet and lack of physical development.
So what occurs?
Stoop is infringement of a posture in which basis lays in increasing the chest kyphosis (a bend of a backbone ahead) with simultaneous reduction of lumbar lordosis (a bend of a backbone back). Forearms are raised. Humeral joints are resulted. Stoop is often combined with alar scapula when the bottom corners or internal edges of scapula lag behind a chest wall. The stomach comes out.
Round back is the infringement of a posture connected with substantial growth of chest kyphosis and absence of the lumbar lordosis. Prevalent symptoms a projection of deviation of the general mass center rearward, children stand and walk on slightly bent legs. The basic inclination corner is reduced and it also promotes hip bend installation towards an average body line. The head is inclined ahead, forearms are raised, humeral joints are resulted, the breast sinks down, and hands hang down hardly ahead of a trunk. The round back is often combined with alar scapulas. The stomach comes out.
A roundly-concave back is infringement of a posture consisting of an increase in all physiological bends of a backbone. Legs are slightly bent or in position of a lung over-hogging in knees. The stomach comes out, or even hangs down. Forearms are raised, humeral joints are restricted, and the head can be pushed ahead from an average body line. Roundly-concave back is often combined with alar scapulas.
Obviously, posture support is very hard for many people. But it is one of the most effective fights with foregoing diseases. Posture support includes: curative gymnastics, therapeutic exercises, using of posture chairs, using of posture mattress (orthopedic) and, certainly walking, standing and sitting straight!
