Added: 03/06/2006

When it comes to contraception, condoms have always been popular but let's face it: they're a bit messy, and you always have to interrupt what you're doing to pull one out of your pocket and put it on. Oral contraception pills on the other hand eliminate all that fuss. Oral contraception pills are very popular due to their high efficacy, multiple advantages and the commodity of use. With a proper oral contraception use the efficacy rate is almost 100%. Besides contraceptive benefits, health professionals may prescribe contraceptive pills for various conditions and hormonal disorders.

Oral contraception is one of the most popular contraceptive methods. It happens because in most of the cases its advantages clearly overweight the disadvantages. The advantages of oral contraception pills are numerous. With a proper use they assure a high level of efficacy. The users of oral contraception pills are generically divided into two groups: the ideal user and the typical user.

The ideal user is respecting strictly all the principles of oral contraception use. In this case the rate of failure is one to 1000. However, most of the users can be characterized as "typical", as they do not respect strictly oral contraception principles. For the typical user the medium rate of failure is 50 to 1000. Patients who want to achieve a 100% protection from pregnancy usually combine oral contraception pills with another non-hormonal contraceptive method, such as condom or spermicidal.

Another advantage is the separation of pills administration from the sexual intercourse. Many women may feel more comfortable and spontaneous about their sexual activity. Another obvious benefit of oral contraception pills is the reversibility of contraceptive effect. If a woman decides to have a child she can interrupt the pills administration any time.

Sometimes the fertility may resume after two-three months. Also there are some non-contraceptive benefits of the pills. These include excessive level of androgen hormones, acne, dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, functional ovarian cysts, hirsutism, premenstrual syndrome, and more. It is not definitely proved the benefic effect of oral contraceptives in all these diseases. However, there are studies that demonstrate good results of oral contraception use in different hormonal disorders.

The main disadvantage of oral contraception pills is definitely that it does not protect from sexually transmitted infections. That is why oral contraception is not recommended as the only protective method for people who may change their partners frequently. In these cases it is recommended to use a barrier method (male or female condoms), in order to prevent such serious infections as HIV or hepatitis B.

Another incommodity is that the pill must be taken with regularity. Most of the women do not consider this as a disadvantage. But some of them may find it difficult to remember to take the pill every day. Most common side-effects may be headaches, nausea or spotting, missed or very light periods, depression, and decreased sexual libido.

Oral contraceptive principles are simple. The pill must be taken every day, at the same time. There are packs with 21 pills, and with 28 pills. If you have a 28 pills pack, you must take a pill everyday, starting with the first day of the period. If you have a 21 pills pack you must also start taking them on the first day of the period, and after the last pill, to make an interruption for 7 days, and then start another pack.

Oral contraceptive pills are an effective and convenient contraceptive method. It is important to consult a professional in order to determine if you have no contraindications for them. Your health professional will also instruct you about the proper oral contraception use.
