The world today is moving at the breathtaking speed and the amazing progress that was made in the sphere of technical development and medicine is sometimes absolutely unbelievable. But when we start to think about the various achievements, it becomes obvious how little humanity has developed in other respects. The topic of teens and smoking can be used in order to illustrate this point.
We may speak contemptuously of ancient Romans because they relished the orgies with vine and were known for promiscuous behavior, regardless of the detrimental effect those activities had on their health. But are we much more reasonable in the respect of safeguarding our health? If we turn to the problem of teens and smoking, we can see that young people are fully aware of the possible negative consequences that smoking may have on their health, but nevertheless they prefer to take their chances and abandon themselves at the mercy of nicotine.
The difference between under-civilized Romans and modern smoking teenagers is that Romans had only suppositions about the potential effect their lifestyle may have on their health, while exhaustive amounts of all kinds of relevant information is now available to modern teens and smoking still doesn't seem too bad of a hobby for them. What also doesn't speak for smoking teens is the fact that they refuse to take responsibility for destroying their health on their own initiative.
There exist numerous theories about the major teen smoking causes, and there is no denying the fact that all of them have considerable grounding underneath. But in discussing various aspects of the problem of teens and smoking people sometimes tend to disregard the well-proved fact that it is within human powers to resist any type of temptation simply using will power and self-determination. Opinion has been voiced that the major element in stop teen smoking advices should be accent on self-testing in terms of will power.
Nevertheless, regardless of all the debate about the issue of teens and smoking, the fact remains such that most teens if they are not smoking at the moment have at least once tried the poisonous substance. What is in fact unquestionable is that nicotine is not an element the absence of which in the organism can cause discomfort, however if we look at the later stages of the "smoking career" in the lives of teens and smoking there occupies a much more dominant position. Psychological addiction comes into play and teens turn to a cigarette as a panacea for any disorder.
They believe that smoking can help them collect their thoughts, but in fact all smoking does is distracts them from the problems, as the process of inhaling and exhaling smoke occupies part of their attention. Stop teen smoking advices do not normally have the desirable effect; moreover, they seem o fall on dead ears.
Teens seem to be willing to sacrifice their health for the sake of being thought cool. But the nice tendency today is that smoking is becoming increasingly not cool.
