Benefits of sports massage

Added: 02/28/2006

Sports massage is referred to as a special form of massage typically used before, during and after various athletic events. It is evident that the purpose of a sports massage is to prepare the sportsman for peak performance and drain away the fatigue. At the same time, any massage is performed to relieve swelling, reduce muscle tension and, no doubt, promote the necessary level of flexibility and prevent possible injuries.

Speaking about a sports massage therapy, it's important to pay attention to the origins of massage itself. According to the well-known historical data, massage has been recorded as one of the oldest forms of physical therapy and used in different countries and by different cultures more than three hundred years ago. And only recently people became acquainted with massage techniques and developed new typed of massage including the sports one. Whatever the massage type, the therapist has always some specific goal in mind. In sports massage, he or she is known to be concentrated on the individual needs of the sportsman. More and more people begin to take part in sports every year. At the same time, we can see the increase in physical exercise intensity and competitiveness. This tendency is known to lead to a greater number of people requiring sports massage. The demand on this kind of services has increased significantly for the last two decades. Sports massage has become more recognized as a technique which may enhance the sportsman's performance and aid recovery. So, the major purpose of sports massage usage is to help alleviate tension and stress which often occur in human body's soft tissues during various kinds of physical activity. However, be aware that if you have some lesions or minor injuries sports massage can easily break them down. At the same time, being performed before the sports competition or training, sports massage usually helps to prevent some niggling injuries. Depending on the sportsman's needs there is a great variety of different techniques to be used in sports massage. Most commonly it involves the blend of natural Shiatsu and Swedish massage specifically introduced for treating professional sportsmen (particularly athletes). It goes without saying that each type of sports performance requires from its players different techniques. And each of them involves different muscle groups. Therefore sports massage has been designed to address particular concerns of different sportsmen and may differ depending on the sport performed by the athlete. In some cases sports massage is aimed at healing the muscles and allowing healthy muscles to reach the peak sports performance and, of course, be ready to maintain this peak minimizing the possible risk of injury. Sports massage should be applied skillfully. If so, it can be the most efficient therapy for restoring the balance to the human's muscular-skeletal system. At the same time sports massage is preferred to be received on a regular basis to help the sportsman prevent injuries. Otherwise, the person may experience constant stresses in joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles themselves. Very often the person has muscle imbalances developed. If they are not properly diagnosed and treated they may become rather serious and cause discomfort and in some severe cases - impede performance. Thus, it is very important for every sportsman (particularly, professional one) to have his or her own therapist to detect variations in the tissues and use correct techniques for helping the person to maintain a healthy physical state.
