In synchronized swimming there is a so-called technical and free routine, and each one differs significantly. The technical routine has very rigid requirements regarding all the elements that can be judged. As for the free part of the program routine, creativity and flair are being judged above all. So more ad more, swimmers are trying to use complex elements and add innovative movements in their programs.

Modern synchronized swimming is not like it was in the beginning. These days it includes two types of programs - free routine and technical routine. The technical routine has some pretty rigid requirements regarding the set of elements that must be performed by swimmers. And as for free routine - there are no such rigid requirements here - swimmers can compose their own program.
