In Canadian football two teams, each consists of twelve players, try to win territorial control of a football field of 110 yards long and 65 yards wide, with end areas 20 yards deep. Canadian football competitions are held at various levels in Canada including several junior divisions with the main trophy called the Vanier Cup.

The first Grey Cup was introduced by the Canadian Governor General in 1909 to award the winning Canadian amateur football rugby team. By this time rugby in Canada had become strikingly different from the rugby union from which it derived. Eventually, the Grey Cup was included into the property of the Football League of Canada.
