The first Grey Cup was introduced by the Canadian Governor General in 1909 to award the winning Canadian amateur football rugby team. By this time rugby in Canada had become strikingly different from the rugby union from which it derived. Eventually, the Grey Cup was included into the property of the Football League of Canada.
